The nicest blocks make the nicest pipes

Post by Sasquatch »

Funny that.

I was recently asked to make some pretty nice pipes, these are guys who are willing to wait for the right block to come along, whether it takes a year or a week to find it.

First an "Arundel", a very rare Sasieni shape, sort of a mixture of a bulldog and a billiard, with panels at 45 degrees. What a bitch to carve, but the block was up to the challenge, even if the pipemaker flagged a little.

Another upstanding citizen requested a cross between a dublin and a horn, silver band, blasted, red. Managed it too.

Just finished up a megalith of a pipe, kind of like a Pete xl90 but actually XL - this one is 2 1/2" tall and 6" long.

Great pipes Sas! Love the second one personally. I agree though .. that first one would be a ho to carve properly and to the right proportions.

Last one is no slouch either.

Is have to say the blast work on the second makes it my fav of the three. It reminds me of a Dunhill shell blast, if that's not too general.

That dublin/horn is a sight to behold (and be held) and that blood red finish is amazing. I've really been getting into (and getting my hands on) dublins lately. Even if you're a troll, they make you look elegant as hell. Would love to see the top of that one.

S'flat and blasted, with a little smooth bevel. I like the bevel on pipes with a reclined chamber shape, just to ease the heat on the top corner, as it were.

Yeah, the blast/grain/texture on the Horny Dublin is really spectacular, all while maintaining some pretty strict curves. I think I would have ordered it in a different color but it's great you're attracting clients with visions who know you can make them real.

The Arundel isn't as sexy but it's very precise and seems to have captured an energy behind its restrained facade. Any tips you might share for shaping such exacting geometry?

Keep a punching bag and a bottle of rum in the shop.

I just "went and did it". Next time, I think I'd finish the thing as completely as I could before doing the panels, and then do some geometry on the stummel rather than just eyeballing it.

Nice pipes Sas. The "hornlin" as Nate called it, is really nice.

Sweet sasparilla, Sasquatch! Those are some sweet pipes! The overhead of the Arundel is stunning. Almost cobra-esque. Excellent stuff!

Also, just yesterday I stumbled upon an old thread from 2009 when you'd just finished your blasting set up. You've certainly learned a thing or two in three years. :P

Again, Sasskicking pipes!

Dang dawg, you work faster than Sutter!

And you read the grain 100% perfect on #2. I'm still jelly I can't afford one...

I agree with nate.. the hornlin is the nicest for me.. the first one just doesn't do it for me, no matter who made it.. maybe you could talk to ernie and he'd stamp it for you :-)

the billiard is nice also, but the hornlin is the bang

I like the first pipe ("Arundel") myself. But, I love Bulldogs, so that is no surprise to me.

They're all really nice though, incredible craftsmanship.
