KC Pipe Carving Contest for 2013 announced...

Post by Tyler »

Shape is a Dublin or variant.

Variants specifically include Zulus, cutties, yachtsman, and belges.

I don't think of those as Dublin variants, but thems the rules.

I think I may have time to finally enter this year. Who's with me?

Would any of you know if you need to physically be there to enter one of these, or can you mail a pipe in?

Thanks,
Bill

Mail ins are fine. If they don't win they will offer them for sale at the show and ship them back to you if they don't sell.

Well if Sas is sitting it out, I might as well go for it. He's the only other guy who makes fat, overweight pipes and without him participating I might have a chance of winning something.

Well, it's in June, so I figure I will make one in May and decide if it is worthy of shipping it off at that time :)

I was thinking the same thing. No sense getting started on it any time soon, because it's amazing what a year's worth of work can do to increase your skills!

If I made one now, I'd probably laugh at it when it was time to submit it. That's mostly because I have SO much room for improvement. A pipe I make in June compared to one now will just have to be better :D

I noticed that. They probably got tired of having to cover the shipping of all the unsold pipes back to the makers.

After seeing last years entries I'm sitting this one out. I'd be ashamed even to consider it!

Hey now, in your defense, I saw your pipe in person and thought it looked much better than what I was expecting. I don't think you have anything to be ashamed of!

I will probably enter again. I'm confused by the cutty and belge being in the dublin family though. Who decided that and on what basis? What am I missing?

Based on the announcement, only thing I can figure is that they are characterizing any shape that tapers inward somehow as
"dublinesque." I never saw a cutty and thought "that's kind of a Dublin," but that's ok. It's a super fun contest, and I'm really appreciative of their doing it no matter what. As long as the shape isn't "something Sasquatch would make" I'm in. :P

I did a cutty once. I think.

Or maybe it was a dublin.

Actually, now that I think about it, maybe it was a great big fat Oom Paul.

Well, whatever. Sounds like they want something long and skinny.
