Countersinking the Mortise Problem - Help Needed

Good afternoon guys,

I would like to ask you for some help if possible.

I am using a Drill Press and the Pimo Countersinking tool and when i countersink the mortise i cannot get a smooth finish on the edges of the mortise. The surface appears all dented.

What could be the problem? Could i be using a wrong speed? Could the direction of the Drill Press be wrong?

Thank you in advance.

Regards

Bruno

I have the same countersink. It does tear the mortise up quite a bit, even when I use it on the lathe. I countersink by hand now and get much better results. Just make sure you have a good grip on the countersink and stummel and twist....it's really that easy.

Is that a single or multiple flute countersink? I tried a single flute countersink once and got what you're describing, then I moved to a "smooth finish" countersink with 5 flutes, and never picked up the old countersink again.

My preference is a zero flute countersink, they make a lovely smooth clean chamfer.

I used to play the flute, but the finish was never very smooth.

I use the countersink from PIMO but turn it by hand. It chatters too much in the drill press and lathe. Use a light hand and you'll get a smooth, even chamfer.

Thank you very much for your answers.

I will do it by hand then.

I also used to have this problem when I was using a drill press. As soon as I got my lathe this was no longer an issue. My lathe is bolted down to a heavy base built of cinder blocks and angle iron so I think it was chattering too much on the drill press.
