the Blowfish is done

Post by the rev »

Not exactly what I wanted in the finish but I think I know how to fix that next time.

What really sucked is as I applied stain, it revealed a hairline crack all the way into the tobacco chamber. It is high up in the chamber so I can keep it and smoke out of it, but I was pretty distraught.

anyways please don't concentrate too much on the stem, I needed to move on to some other pipes that need to be finished.

but blast away, I am quite eager for your critique

well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin

"but what would be smoking to excess?"

Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Hey Rev, glad to see it done! I forgot to mention earlier you may want to give that stem a slight bend. What do you think?

I can't comment much on the pipe, but you really need to get rid of those edges on the bit.

do you mean the inside of the bit? Someone else said the sides of the button should meet the edge of the stem so that needs fixing, but you mean something else yeah?

No, I'm talking about how the sides of the button stick out making the stem look like a "T" in stead of a "V".

Personally speaking I am finding it hard to see a lot of to contours due to it being black and having shadows. I love the stem :)

yeah, I don't have great lighting either. And it isn't actually black... it is dark brown and blue :) I figured that would be really hard to capture in picture :)

Hope you know I wasn't saying I didn't like it lol. Looks pretty awesome to me, esp. the shank.

not at all brother, and even if you did say you didn't like it its all good. Some of the pipes I like are hideous monstrosities to many of the people here

My apologies if that sounded a bit harsh. Maybe I should explain myself better. To my eye (and keep in mind that I am just an amateur with loads to learn!) this pipe have a lot of extra baggage. At the moment for me this is just a lump of wood and a lot more wood can be taken away to trim it down, make it more flowing and get the details sharper.
The blowfish is not easy to make, hats off to you for trying it so early!

I like the shape both the stem and the bowl, a little bit of the bend would help though. What I don't like is the button though, sorry.

yeah I am having a hell of a time with my buttons. I changed this one, and gave it a small bend it looks a bit better, but man am I finding these hard to do.

Charl, I did not care about the seeming harshness, I put it up for criticism. I took it for that. I prefer your second post however, because it gives me more specifics to look for. The pipe I was using as a rough outline for this one was much more elegant, but seemed in my eye to have that same "largeness" to it. I was trying to give it a more dramatic and quirky look. But like everyone says your first pipes will be bad pipes. I come here for people to tell me the truth not to but powder on my butt and tell me I am precious. When I said thank you I meant it, and spent a half hour looking at the pipe and the pictures to see how I could make it less lumpy.

I took the sides off of the button and bent it just a bit. You can't see the buttons in these pictures, but you can see the shape a bit better and the stem
