Jam Chuck
Jam Chuck
I am making some briar nosewarmers. I don't have a regular 3 or 4 jaw chuck. So to round the top half of the bowl, I use a 3/4" dowel held in a collet chuck and snug it up with the live center in the tail stock. Since the shank is so short I can pretty much eyeball it using the stem as a guide while shaping it on a belt sander. Other than spring for a chuck, is there a better way to do this? Oh, all drilling is done on a drill press.
Re: Jam Chuck
The only other way I can think to do that Doug would be to glue a stummel onto a plywood plate if you have a faceplate for the lathe. But I don't really think thats better than what you are doing.

Yeah gluing would seem to be a PITA to get lined up. Guess I'll stay with what I got until or if I get a chuck.

Re: Jam Chuck
You should do a forum search for tower jaw chuck. Kurt Huhn is big on that.
