Drilling from shank and bowl to make airways meet at 90 deg

I just got a notice from Smokingpipes re: new pipes and was looking at some by Sergey Senatorov. It seems that he, frequently, drills an airway from the end of the shank, then one from the bottom of the bowl, to meet at right angles. They even warn the purchaser about that.

Here is a link to one of his pipes drilled this way:

Have you ever drilled a pipe like that? Is it tough? Do you think it makes sense? Does it gurgle like mad? I can see where it might free one up re: shapes.

I would wager the same, probably only a problem if you are a dribbler or smoke a very moist tobacco.

Have you ever made one like that? I can see it would be, more or less, easy peasy, lemon squeezy if you have the custom chuck where you can just rotate the briar, but might be a bit tougher if you have to re-chuck each time.

By the way, when I "dribble" it goes down my chin onto my shirt.

I havnt made one specifically like that but I have made pipes where the bowl didn't meet the airway so a connection hole had to be drilled. Never had any reports of bad smoking, just that cleaning is a little more fiddly.

That's interesting. Sometimes, I see pipes by certain makers and think, "how the hell do they connect the airway with the bottom of the bowl?"

Fascinating.

Trained boring beetles!

The best gnaw a 5/32" hole.
