Well burned into the airhole for the first time

You hear about it, and you think, man, that must really suck. But when you actually do it, the amount of suck that it sucks is so sucky that I flung that sucker across the sucking room and now want to curl in the fetal position and have sas throw pipes at me.

I vow I will never do it again...

I usually yell, "FUCK!!" and throw it on the floor. Then I pout for a while. I take the stem out first, in case I might be able to use it on something else.

Hope this helps.

The first time I ever sanded into an airway was on a churchwarden- during final sanding. I flipped shit.

I remember reading a post about how one did that, then cut the shank down, put an extension on, and voila, new, improved, pipe! Not quite the old pipe, but a pipe nonetheless!

Just memory of a post, not experience, I'm too chickenshit to actually get that close!

When I screw a pipe up, which is like, once every two years or so, you know... but when it does happen, I just give up on the pipe - I hate it, I never want to see it again, it didn't want to be part of my vision, so screw it.

Having a wood stove helps a lot though - they say a man who heats with wood is twice warm, but when the wood is a piece of briar that screwed you, it's thrice warming to watch the shit burn.

I wrecked about a meter of cumberland a long time ago, haven't really ruined a stem since, but then I don't try and do all this goofy thin shit you high-graders do.

The best part is when the hole opens up when you are finish buffing. Suddenly, the light at the end of the tunnel is extinguished and you are left alone, in the dark, awash in a pool of self hatred and your own foul incompetence.

Ha! Just waxing a little poetic. I read too much Bukowski.

I also just finished a groomsmen set of seven billiards, which was actually nine stummels and ten stems, I think. : /

it was the airway in the stem not the shank

If it happens in the stem I get really annoyed, but not as annoyed as when it happens in the briar. Still when it does happen I tend to finish up the shaping, then stick a piece of stainless or brass tubing through it, sandblast and give it to a friend. I did experiment with doing this intentionaly in my short lived "bridge" series of pipes but never really truly liked the final result so gave up on it, discovered a good way to save a smokable pipe though and a couple of friend now enjoy a pipe built like this, all smoke well so I have heard.

That's too bad Todd. It's awful when you fuck up an otherwise perfect flame grain er.... hairbrush.

Harris, since Sas already teased you about the "hairbrush" I won't jab too hard, but what is that thing? Am I just holding my phone at the wrong angle? :)

It's a commission that I am currently working on. The customer designed his pipe in 3D CAD and sent me the specs. Here is a computer rendering of what it is eventually supposed to look like.

Actually, I managed to finish it this morning before work:

(Sorry Wayne. I didn't sand the chamber yet.)

Someone has too much time on their hands if they can make a pipe in CAD just for funsies. I guess it was nice to have a nice exact drawing to refer to though.
