shop pipes?

Post by wisemanpipes »

i've been reading alot of old posts and people who are just starting out. they show odd looking or not 100% accurate drilling, shape, proportions etc... every one says they will make this there shop pipe. im no exception to the shop pipe and have a few.

im proposing the questions; how many "shop pipes" do you guys have? and how many is too many.
Personally, i have what looks like 30+ that lve made since i started and its always growing (unfortunatly), but keep about 7 around that i smoke regularly.

SOOO...how many d'ya got?

Three. That's it. When I screw up a pipe it tends to be completely destroyed, so those that survive to "shop pipe" are rather rare.

Only a couple, if they are really bad flaws then i don't bother wasting the time to finish them, if the flaws are minor then I put them to one side and finish them up as presents for friends later on.

i guess i should have been more specific. i guess i consider a shop pipe a pipe that i will finish but for now its reallly only a rough out line that has either horrible flaws or i fucked up bad. some dont actually have stems so i probably dont have that many if i only counted completed...sanded stained polished pipes etc. i think im with you chris, give it to a friend is a good choice. really number is ~10 or so but a few of those are just to bad to smoke ie giant crack, aweful slot work or draught hole to high and off center. i gues i still have to many

I only have a couple. If a pipe is flawed to the extent that I can't sell it but I actually decide to finish it, I typically gift it to a friend. I don't typically take the time to finish flawed pipes out though. One of these days I'm going to take the time to make myself my perfect pipe.

I missed center on a pipe, will smoke fine, but I just don't have time to finish the pipe. One of these days... I need another shop pipe, just bought some cobs to hold me over

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"

well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin

"but what would be smoking to excess?"

Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Here are my shop pipes. Only one of them did I actually purpose to make for myself. The others were either really early on pipes, or just pipes that don't fit my standards today. These are the ones I've kept. I've given a good number away too.

I'm not trying to hijack Wiseman's thread here. I just always like seeing pictures, so I posted one myself. :D These pipes aren't for sale. When I say these are my "shop" pipes, what that means is, these are my only pipes. Minus a few stragglers that I didn't make, this is the sum of my collection. I use them both in my shop and for all around smoking. I guess I don't make a distinction. I just smoke whatever pipe wherever.

That's the only I actually purposefully made for myself. It an Acrylic "horn" band. I haven't worked with metal yet.
