sanding discs?

Post by wisemanpipes »

just throwing this question out there about sanding discs. i have always used either a 6inch thick back hook and loop or a thinner 7 inch hook and loop sanding disc, but i watched a video on smokingpipes website where it shows Mr. Weaver using what looks like a resin backed one that screws onto and arbor. which do you use and which one is easier to use? personally i think the resin disc would be good at getting into the corners the hook and loop pad cant get to.

your thoughts?

Is that a "Diablo" pad? If so, that's what I am using for the meantime. I have my eyes on another which tapers from the backside to the edge more.

That's a nice lathe  I'm just wandering if all these cables/ropes aren't hanging a bit too close to the spinning wheels? It wouldn't be cool to see them grabbed and spun onto the headstock...

As to the sanding disc, I use one just like the one in the pic, plus a smaller one of the same type, plus one that I made myself out of wood and another one for rough shaping- a stiff plastic disc from an orbital sander with a rough grit disc glued to it.

yes, that's a diablo 5". couldn't think of the name earlier.

You're right about the cables, they have been removed.

You cab find them at home depot. Resin disks seldom stay flat, leaving you with two hig spots that 'slap' the block as you are trying to shape the block. I use a 7" resin disk for initial shaping, then move to finer grits. Take a look at Kurta disk that he sells. That is a good setup too. I would not go smaller than 7" for heavy stock removal if given a choice. Plus, you can easily flatten one side if you are drilling first.

7 inch fiber backed discs are very standard. They kick the most ass.
