Cavalier Shape

I am carving a Cavalier, and am looking for opinions on drilling the airway.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages in drilling as shown in the righthand sketch as opposed to the left hand.

Random,

I've never made one either. It was requested by a customer.

This pipe does have a removable plug on the lower end, and I assume that is the purpose of this particular design.

There's nothing in particular that I can think of that would make a larger bore at the bottom better than a smaller. Unless this guy is smoking sopping wet tobacco, the small bore should be fine. I like Random's approach, but it would lead to a rediculously open airway, which the person might or might not like. I suppose a larger bore at the bottom would make it a bit weaker. Thats somthing to consider.

Nice idea for aromatics. Just got some McClelland's "Just Plain Nut" that won't smoke in any of my pipes. Too wet and goopy. I'll try to carve up a cavalier today and see how it goes (walnut or loquat branch).
