What do you think? I love innovation, even if, at first, it doesn't work. The reverse calabash has certainly taken off, though I have never smoked one.

Oh, I suspect you are quite a lady!scotties22 wrote:I have no shame....and I ain't no lady either. Why are you suprised I would go there???
What I meant was dragging that issue back to the forefront, kind of like starting a MM thread again!
By the way, has anyone bought any of his pipes yet?

Answering my own question, nope.wmolaw wrote:Oh, I suspect you are quite a lady!scotties22 wrote:I have no shame....and I ain't no lady either. Why are you suprised I would go there???

If you haven't, you should go back through some of the threads in which he, well, participated! Take a look at his pipes, they are quite the bargain!

I saw this today- interesting read, and the pipe is pretty unique.wmolaw wrote:What do you think? I love innovation, even if, at first, it doesn't work. The reverse calabash has certainly taken off, though I have never smoked one.

I think I have to question the purpose though, I think the argument can be made he is simply making something crazy and calling it art- I cannot help but wonder about the purpose behind the crazy. I think the concept is really intriguing mind you, I just have to question the fore-thought of the design.
This piece will probably shake things up in the pipe-design sphere mind you, it's a very interesting starting point.
I think one of my favorite pieces from Revyagin is this: http://scandpipes.com/product.asp?product=537
Much more toned down albeit, but the lines are lovely- the whole piece feels much more controlled.
Just my thoughts, please argue, it's fun!
Cheers!

Re: Michael Revyagin
It's a slowly evolving role reversal that has come about because of the Internet. As in, artisan makers were essentially unknown until a way to sell their pipes directly---at retail prices---to Planet Earth was invented; and now that they can, they are their own bosses. Tradition from the top down no longer rules the PipeWorld, but the carvers themselves are leading the way from the bottom up.The Smoking Yeti wrote: I think I have to question the purpose though, I think the argument can be made he is simply making something crazy and calling it art- I cannot help but wonder about the purpose behind the crazy. A friend of mine has a couple dozen of Revyagin's pipes, so I've seen them up close. He's more of a designer/dreamer/imaginer guy than an implementer. Definitely capable, but not in the first rank of technical masters. I can't fault the fertility of his brain, though. He just keeps throwing stuff out there like a true artist, not giving the slightest consideration to who might like it. Has that approach been successful? Some of his designs are now classics. Not many carvers can say that, especially in so short a time.I think one of my favorite pieces from Revyagin is this: http://scandpipes.com/product.asp?product=537

I tend to agree, though I am not sure that, even today, the 100% best way to get the smoke from point A to point B has yet to be determined. The Smoking Yeti wrote:I saw this today- interesting read, and the pipe is pretty unique.wmolaw wrote:What do you think? I just find it fascinating that after all these decades, centuries, innovation is still there.
Re: Michael Revyagin
I love his work, but a few go beyond my taste. This is one of those.

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"
well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin
"but what would be smoking to excess?"
Why smoking two pipes at once of course

I have one. A little reverse calabash. Smokes great, nothing better than a Roush or Manz, but all the same.
Was it worth the price.....
