stem biting

Before the crash I posted a question hoping George ( Latakia Lover ) might have an answer. I noticed that I clench the stem a little harder on a straight stem pipe than I do on a bent pipe, so My question is do You do more stem repairs on straight pipes? This was during a discussion about the thickness of the bit behind the button and You posted what You consider good thicknesses depending on how much someone bites when smoking. Thanks, Norm.
