That little hybrid cutty/warden thing I made a few months ago never looked completely right to me, and I finally realized that's what it was. So, I laid a three degree cut on the rim earlier this evening, and am much happier.

Since it had to be re-stained, I decided to do it this time in that early Dunhill Bruyere "plum" color that Britfreaks like me get all excited by. Gave the pipe a vintage vibe, I think, that suits me better than the semi-contrast gold/brown that was there before.

I still want to put a 3/16" wide, flush silver band on it one day, but except for that the thing is finally done:

Cool that you're diggin' it. Kinda quirky, but that's why I made the thing. I had the shape stuck in my head for years and kept looking for one on a shelf somewhere, but never could and so finally did it myself.

The bevel was indeed made with starfished sandpaper molded & taped to a sphere. In this case the bottom of a 10" diameter copper bowl designed to whip egg whites.

The color is easy: Alcohol-based Feibing's oxblood underneath a 50/50 blend of chocolate and medium brown. Full strength and heavy-handed for all. Four coats of the oxblood, then the brown combo over the top until it looks right. Very stable, very deep, and very rich. Looks better in hand than in the pic (as most dark colors do).

He glued sandpaper to a nut and went to town ? Thats got to be worth more than a pipe sanded on Sasquatches thigh.
Also, Premals "balls deep" comment in another thread has new meaning.

As for making pipes, I'm not. That one was it. I just wanted to see if I could, and also gain some appreciation and understanding of what was involved.
