KC Carving Contest sticky
Yo, Tyler/Kurt ---
The contest sticky got nuked in the recent Great Data Loss of 2013, and it was cooking right along. Can we have it back? The show is in June, so the Q & A will be picking up soon. Quinton will also need a place to park the official rules and announcements as they come up.
I talked to him recently, btw, and he wanted me to assure everyone that a billiard bowled straight pipe of any shank length or shank cross section (with a max overall length of 7.5" or so, so that they'll fit in the presentation case if selected), is definitely still the shape.
Thanks

Re: KC Carving Contest sticky
We need to have Dan (I assume he does the website since he does the newsletter) change the shape criteria on the website. It still says the pipe can be straight or bent. It has, however, been changed to say the pipe is the billiard.

I learned how to make pipes from a Texan, and they call em Billards, not Billiards.

Re: KC Carving Contest sticky
Received from Quinton Wells in an email, and cross posted here by me:
PMF'ers,
You have heard the rumors.... it's true. This years shape is the straight billiard. What we are really looking at is the bowl. We want a traditional classic billiard bowl. However, the shank and stem are up to you, as long as they are straight. Because the display case is made in advance we need to keep the overall length in the 5-7" ballpark, no 10" Canadian's, they won't fit.
I'll send out a more detailed email after the holidays, but I think you already see where we are going. Past contests have put great emphasis on innovation. This year we want to see if you can make a classic.
If you have questions or comments, please contact me. Start practicing now, June will be here before you know it! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
Quinton

Is there a billiard that has the Quintonsential shaped bowl? or quintessential or however the heck it's spelt. Like a dunhill number so-n-so?

Re: KC Carving Contest sticky
No. There is no perfect or ideal bowl. Here's how an entry's "billiard-ness" will be decided for the purposes of the contest:Vermont Freehand wrote:Is there a billiard that has the Quintonsential shaped bowl? or quintessential or however the heck it's spelt. Like a dunhill number so-n-so?
A pipe will be considered a billiard if it does not look more like something else, such as an apple, brandyglass, pot, etc.

Don't underestimate the Daisy threat. I think the cat is actually trained to attack. Cat jumped on George the other day while I was talking with him. Pretty sure he was teaching it to go for the neck (as if its predatory instincts needed encouragement).LatakiaLover wrote:And you too, l'il missy. Dunhill 103, 106, and 110 are to my mind pretty quintessential.
Peterson also has a 106, a little beefier but still classic.
The bowl on Savinelli "Bing's Favorite" is awfully billiardy, and the 111 and 128 shapes are again pretty standard.
There's a hundred variations, taller, squarer, whatever, but these (to my mind anyhow) are sort of standard-issue.

Nah, me and Daisy is friends. We had a wonderful afternoon together while George was filming his behind the button video. I gave her some special cat treats and she pledged her undying allegiance to me.andrew wrote:Don't underestimate the Daisy threat. I think the cat is actually trained to attack.
