The last time I got into an argument like this on the web, it ended badly, with a picture of me in a pink tutu. The whole thing was to demonstrate that not all art is good art, as opposed to what my antagonist and good friend asserted. :fencing: Like Sas says, if you are out of step, you are out of step, and it does not necessarily follow that you are ahead. Lots of people are out there creating some really awful stuff. The rest of society is ultimately the judge of that. It is only those who are judged good who are remembered.

Ok, one skill I'm lacking in is the ability to sort all this mess out!

That is why I prefer to just do my own thing, make the pipes that I want to make, and let my work take me wherever it takes me. I am not a great businessman...

If I'm out of step, so be it. I made what I wanted to make. If folks like it, that's great. If they don't, I'll try not to think less of them. But there is a buyer for every pipe.

I am happy you are back Walt, let's see some creativity! Your designs were cutting edge the first time around and you got a very interesting finish. Time to put them together?

Oh, they're coming! I have a secret project in full effect right now. I've been waiting on an order of large diameter acrylics to come in so I could finish my current project, and they just arrived minutes ago! Some leaked photos of the top-secret project can be found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8843

...and here is my 1.5in square acrylic that I just got in. Pretty excited about this!

Broken record : Nobody is saying it does. At least I'm not. The point is (IN MY OPINION  ) that it can. And there have been more than enough examples of that cited by now to establish it as a valid possibility.
The rest of society is ultimately the judge of that.
Meh . . . Only to the extent that it votes with its wallet.

IN MY OPINION  the rest of society is not unlike a herd of cattle managed by a few cowboys. As far as judgement goes, on its own, it only echoes whatever it's used to seeing around it by those it looks up to. Inadmissibly cynical ?
It is easy enough to cite examples of those who were out of step and made it. Who remembers those who didn't? I don't. No one else does. But they are legion. Actually, I do know a couple of the wannabes, but I won't bore you with their stories.

The rest of society is everyone but you. That includes the unwashed masses (hoi polloi), as well as the alleged intelligentsia. Either you make it or you go down the memory hole. That applies to pipe design as well, since you were wondering. It applies to economic success as well as critical acclaim. If your sole goal is to please yourself and yourself alone, then none of this is an issue. But most creative people that I have met, and I have met many in my career, seem to have the "hey look at me!" gene. Maybe I have been hanging out with the wrong people.

Maybe my glass is half full, and yours is half empty ? 8)

Same picture, differing interpretations. Wouldn't be the first time -- here, or anywhere.
Hello Yak,

I am just curious. Who are you? Is there any place where we can see your work?

Yeah, I'd be interested in seeing it too. I am not a pipe maker (yet), but I have some recognizance in my own field.

My background in woodcarving (planes, knives and chisels)/fine arts is having manned a bench in a violin shop, doing restoration work, insurance appraisals, and making stylistically correct replacement parts for bows using traditional 19th century French hand tools & procedures. Previously to that, and on the side, making replicas of Bedford County Kentucky Rifles, and advising Doctor Whisker on the history and development of these. (My name was omitted from maybe 10 of his reference works at my request).

As far as pipes go, I've been collecting (accumulating) & smoking old Britwood (& more recent Italiani) starting in 1974.

Close enough for government work ?

If not, I will gladly go away & leave you in peace.
I am not doubting you. I was just curious to know your background and knowledge of pipes and pipe making. You are most welcome here.

I guess it will do. 8) I will tell you the truth. I've met an awful lot of people in my travels who know it all, but only because they read it on the internet. Experience helps. And yeah, my glass is half empty. A cynic is a pessimist who made it.

Yak,

Your posts are interesting and I do not want you to stop posting. I really was just curious about your background and your work. If you do have examples of some of your work, I would like to see it, but that is up to you to post or send privately. I in no way wanted you to feel unwelcome on this forum, and I am sorry if my question provoked that.

I will go on record and say that I am not trying to pick a fight or run anyone off either. I'm a noob here, and I make no pretense about that. Still and all, it is always good to know if I am discussing things with someone who has been there and done that, or is simply a poseur. I happen to have an interest in rifles and their associated accoutrements, and I would be glad to discuss that subject with you as well.
