I have read mixed reviews about this. I'm going to try it on the pipe I'm working on now. I probably won't get the time to do this for a few days so I wanted to see what everyone thought. I still need to get some stain an wax. The stain I have now I'm not sure if it will work or not. This will be my first pipe that I'm finishing. My first an only pipe I made I sanded then buffed an polished an left it at that.

If you have ordinary wood stain, it won't do anything. Alcohol based dyes are just about the only colorants that do anything to briar.

There's no single answer to sanding and staining - you fool around with it until you get a result you like. Some guys here sand to 600 then stain, others start staining at 320 and sand through the grits and restain during the process.

I thought that ordinary wood stain wouldn't work. I am going to try the stain after each grit process. See how it comes out.

Throw down a coat of stain before you sand at 220. You will be able to see all the scratches and any low spots on the pipe. Keep sanding until they are gone. It will really help get a great finish on the pipe

I prefer staining whilst naked- it really helps me focus on the task at hand- I find my stains end up deeper and more consistent that way.

It's weird, I know. But hey- sometimes strange techniques produce superb results.

I imagine it makes it easier to get to the finer grits in your fur that way.

I'm stupid. I stain after every single grit, else I end up with a stummel at 600 grit full of scratches.

I still do the same, a quick wash stain after 220, and again after every grit. It really helps show when you missed some marks, you'll see it before getting to the next grit.

I stopped staining after each grit because i was tired of people asking why my hands were yellow/brown. Once you have completed several pipes it becomes instinct as to how long you need to sand at a given grit. I also occasionally have to go back to 220 once i finish a pipe. i am dumb.

I used to stain between every grit. Now just before 220. I have a wash coat that I keep specifically for this.

Mmm, seven years of pipemaking.. I think I need more time. Seven time seven sounds good!

I stain after 150 and then after 220 and 320. Staining after 150 shows you low spots that need to come out. Staining after 220 is more about scratches. Of course, I've always done things the hard way.

Um, I don't stain till much later... good thing there's a million ways to stain.
