Looking for activated charcoal
Does anyone have a source for activated charcoal? I have checked all of the local drugstores and they look at me like I'm trying to make a bomb or something. I want to create a bowl coating. Thanks.

I bought mine at the local supermarket. I don't remember exactly where in the pharmacy it was, but it was OTC in a little brown bottle.
Am I Calamity Jane or Annie Oakley??...depends on the day.

Any pet store. They sell it in the aquarium section for filtration.

I got it in the capsul form- found in most pharmacies. I just open the capsuls one at a time. It works well enough.

This is why it still takes you 20+ hours to finish a pipe. The Smoking Yeti wrote:I got it in the capsul form- found in most pharmacies. I just open the capsuls one at a time. It works well enough.

I've been chewing them and spitting in my pipes.

Go to pet store, online also and buy charcoal. Put it in cheap coffee grinder and BANG, Powdered charcoal.

Health food stores.
Besides bowl coatings it's good for stopping the trots.

Re: Looking for activated charcoal
I have a particular method for smoke cooking on my gas grill.
Quick breakdown... I soak the chosen wood chips in water for an hour, make an aluminum "sleeping bad" and place the chips inside, lay this on a grate directly above the burner units. With the flame turned way down (almost to the off position), the wood in the foil only smokes and chars. After the food is cooked, and I clean the grill, I remove the foil pack and inside is a goodly amount of charred hickory (mesquite, apple, cherry or whatever).
Here's the question...
Will the charred remains, once ground (in a blender, coffee grinder, food processor, etc.) be appropriate for bowl coatings, or will these types of woods impart their smoky flavor onto the tobacco?

It will have a distinctive taste I suspect because it won't be fully broken to pure carbon, still a bunch of wood fibers... but all it takes is a clean pipe to try it...

IMHO, a lot of extra work considering the purified stuff is readily found in capsule form at Wally-World. Look in the digestive-aids section.RobEsArt wrote:I have a particular method for smoke cooking on my gas grill.
