There was a 48" (diameter) motor test at the base today. I took pictures. The motor is 1/6 scale to the shuttle solid rocket booster, same fuel and basic configuration but only 24' tall. I've compiled the pictures into a windows media file which is about 2 meg iirc. It's like a slide show but the time reference is about accurate. For size reference, the structure to the far left of the pictures is about 14 stories and is the same distance from the viewing area as the motor. My office is closer but the view is obstructed by trees. This has got to be one of the coolest jobs I've ever had.

The link:

Then "open" the motor test file.

It was very loud, but I had ear plugs in. When the sound reached us the crowd jumped.
Thursday I took a tour and one stop was the missile range and I had the privilege of seeing a TOW missile demolish a tank. That was over on the ARMY side of course. They also let us take turns flying a Black Hawk simulator firing hellfire missiles at "badguys". It was the ultimate video game.
