Who wants an order for 5-10 pipes?

Post by Growley »

The oddest request I've ever received...."An order for 5-10 pipes to be carved in the likeness of this man Image, to be raffled off for cherity at Whitworth college - http://www.whitworth.edu/onemillionmeals/. Apparently he's the founder, and she wants the neck beard and all, lol.

I kindly thanked her and told her that figurals are not my ball of wax. I told her "if" she could find anyone to do it, they wouldn't be cheap. She said she was more concerned with the maker's ability to meet the deadline (end of Apr) than she was price.

To be clear, she's not looking for Meerschaum. She'd like them in briar, and from what I understand, she'll pay up front. I'd said I'd ask you guys, so if any of you are interested, shoot me a PM and I'll put you two in touch.

Dayum.

Someone needs to do their homework, I think.

I'm sure Trever T. would & could do a breathtakingly good job for her... for $1500-2000 each, with a delivery date of 2016.

Yeah anybody who does a good job wouldn't be able to make the timeline.

You could offer to make her some basic Dublins or Billiards and have his likeness laser-cut into the faces of them. I can't imagine how she expects to get 5-10 miniature, hand-made sculptures by April's end.

FAST

GOOD

CHEAP

Pick two.

I'll pass on this commission even though I'm remarkably expert at carving briar neck beards.

That's a good idea. I offered to make a normal pipe and include her school colors into the stem.

But think of it from a college student's perspective, there's probably little substitute for the coolness of smoking out of the likeness your founfer's head.

Wow. That school is my backyard. I work 25 minutes away from it. Weird.

This is why I want a CNC machine...

Even still, creating a 3D model from that photograph would be an art form in itself!
Take a look at my pipe website!

Now I'm no good for that. What if 5-10 talented carvers got together?

I've been getting wood laser engraved for almost 20 years now. It works great, and brings the cost down to bearable (for some people). Before you tell her you can do it, talk to an engraver or two and make sure they can get the pipes on their machine. Depending on where she wants the image, you may have to devise a fixture. There are clearance issues as well.

I could buy 10 Dr. Grabows and glue some pubes on it by the end of April.

That sounds like an unfortunately unrealistic expectation. Not to mention a "niche" skill set.

She should, instead, commission a painting or photo that is presented with a pipe made in his "essence".

Nah, figurals or engraved pipes with heads on them just aren't something I want my stamp on. They're just not my thing. I also will probably never make a 55 or a hawkbill.

This is my first post on here. I'm a 30-something student who returned to school after spending some time in the workforce, and I ended up at Whitworth. Just started making pipes this year. Seriously did not expect to open up a post on this forum and see a picture of good ol' George Whitworth staring at me. Very weird.

I am an EWU alumni but I wish I would have went to Whitworth instead. Check that. I wish I would have skipped college all together :D
