Re: Freehand drilling question
Albert,
We do have lower gas prices, around $3.50/gallon where I am. There's no true way to compare countries with each other objectively. It's all just advantages and disadvantages.
On my visit to Sweeden, I saw Malmö, Stockholm, and Kiruna. I just remember everything looking so clean compared with Dresden where I lived at the time. Maybe I just only saw the good side, but it was a very beautiful place as I remember it. Maybe someday I will have a chance to go back. If I do, we will have to get together.

Yeah I know, there's really no point in comparing anyway, like you say, advantages and disadvantages.
If you come to Sweden sometime you are always welcome to visit. I live just north of stockholm. I've never been as far north as Kiruna myself, warmth is my thing so I tend to go south!
Swedish winters suck, but the summers are awesome, to short though.

Re: Freehand drilling question
I have used both spade and custom ground S&D bits. both are sketchy and both catch. I do not recommend using them. that being said I do freehand drill with S&D because my lathe has low enough torque that I can stop the chuck when the block catches and the belt just slips on the pulleys. its not safe but it works for now. im sure when I hurt myself ill wish that I wasnt so ignorant and bought some spoon bits...

I have worked with wood since high school. Ya ya one room school house and all that. Anyway what I learned quickly was don't hold whatever you can clamp (either wood or metal). It sux when something gets away from you and hurts you to boot.
