What music do you listen to while making pipes? Any songs that have inspired your work while you sanded/drew out shapes? Or do you listen at all? I understand that it might be loud in the workshop most of the time. I tend to listen to acoustic music and Jazz. Some of my favorites are Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus, Soil & Pimp Sessions, J.A.M, The Goat Rodeo Sessions, Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts, and some of Buckethead's calmer albums. Since I also recently found out that Chris Thile is Scott's son, I think I will have to hit up Nickel Creek, haha.

When I'm in an ass-kicking mood, some liquid drum and bass or progressive house hits the spot. I currently do most of my shaping with rasp/file and dowl, so it isn't too hard to hear the music.

Interesting topic to me!

I always have either a podcast (usually joe rogan) or music playing. I've always been curious what others do to occupy their aural senses while working.

The music I play influences the design on the pipe. For example if I want the pipe to feel "dark" I may listen to Tool or something. If I want it sexy and elegant, maybe some miles davis will do... usually this plays more of a part when I'm carving rustification and taking photographs.

My favorite playlists/genres are: Grateful Dead, Phish, Hank Williams, Tool, Cypress Hill, Johnny Cash, Skrillex, Robert Johnson, Miles Davis, and Robben Ford.

Honestly, it's all so soothing that I don't pay much attention to which band plays what.

I just float away emotionally on the almost-magical feeling of serenity and creative energy it provides.

Pipemaking is my only me time. I have a tv in the garage to watch while I work and haven't turned it on in weeks. After a day of the kids screaming I enjoy the quiet while I work . If I did have music on I probably wouldn't hear it anyway as I tend to zone out while I work.

The list really is too long. I actually listen to everything from classical to death metal. I choose wisely though. Only the best of the best. I listen to a lot of Pink Floyd, Zepplin, Sabbath, Clutch, Tool, some Brit rock like Graveyard, witchcraft, and every now and then I'll even listen to 80s early 90's rap. I like a lot of everything

Me too! Obnoxious hardcore, street punk , and thrash. Some Tom Waits to slow things down. I also listen to audiobooks and movies on netflix.

I just play through my iTunes library at random most of the time. One song will be from Star Wars and the next some Buxtehude organ music. I play the music over the sound dock I have. When I'm using the sanding disc, buffer, or sandblaster, I may or may not turn it off, but I can't usually hear it. Sometimes it's an audio book.

Other times, I've got my kids out there and listen to them. One of my favorite things to do is get a friend on Skype while I hand sand or do stem work. A good conversation with a friend helps pass the time.

I am surprised punk got mentioned a couple of times ( I love it) when I am in the shop my friend is there working to and we have pretty similar taste I music.
we usually just end putting on the wood brothers most the time. I usually hit shuffle on my I pod but lately I cant get enough sublime.
