Probably going to show my ignorance with this question...
I've had a good natured, but ongoing debate with a buddy on the proper pronunciation of lovat...
He pronounces it like LOVE-et.
I have always pronounced it la-VOT.
I'm sure I didn't get the phonetic spelling correct in either case, but hopefully it's close enough for our purposes today. Neither of us can really defend our position other than its the way we've always said it...
Anyone have a definitive answer, or are both acceptable?

That's close enough to mine... Marking you down in my column.
Re: Probably going to show my ignorance with this question..
Everyone I know pronounces it lo-VAT, but Merriam-Webster says it rhymes with covet.

I have no idea how to pronounce it, either, so I just sort of slur the first part and concentrate on the "T" at the end, rapidly repeating it machine gun-style --- "Lovat t t t t t t" --- like Dr. Lechter does that little sucking sound after he says "chianti"...
All with an unsettling, maniacal sort of stare, of course.
It tends to chase people away so they don't even notice if I said the word right.

Always wondered about that. I would hazard a guess that Webster has it correct.RadDavis wrote:Everyone I know pronounces it lo-VAT, but Merriam-Webster says it rhymes with covet.

I posted the same question on another forum and was told that the shape was named after Lord Lovat of WWI fame and in a subsequent video link listened to multiple people pronounce it as LOVE-et. Learn something new everyday.

English language pronunciations by English people shouldn't be relied upon... Hell, they put an entire extra syllable in some words (alu-minny-um), and leave them out of others (Gordon Ramsay pronounces "master chef" as "masshef".fiddlestix wrote:I posted the same question on another forum and was told that the shape was named after Lord Lovat of WWI fame and in a subsequent video link listened to multiple people pronounce it as LOVE-et. One of my favorites is Happisburgh. Looks like it oughta be pronounced sort of like the lip, right? It's pronounced Haysbureh.LatakiaLover wrote:English language pronunciations by English people shouldn't be relied upon... That's not even the worst of it. You know they pronounce the word elevator "lyft". I'm under the impression they do it out of spite for losing the colonies. They try to play it off by saying that's what they call it and they invented the language and all but come on.
Re: Probably going to show my ignorance with this question..
Food for thought.
Perique pare-EEK, Per-EEK?
Latakia: la-TAY-kee-ah, lat-a-KEE-ah?
Gawith: Go-with, G-way-TH, gow (rhymes with cow)-ith? ( I know this one, see what Chris says)

Syrians say "lahtah-KEE-a" apparently, and Greeks say "Latak-ya"
One of those things.

Lift is the right word, of course. Elevator is just trying to be fancy.
Driving on the left is also right, right?
And colour is not color!
Dammit!

Samuel Gawith & Co. Ltd to me

An old chestnut this one.
There is only one way to pronounce our name ……£ Sterling !!!
Sorry, joking apart, the correct way is as in Cow it is ” Gowith”, but spelt Gawith.
Best regards

if there were a way to type VT redneck slang, I'd give it a shot, but it's one of those things you have to hear in person, loveit or hateit, thats how we roll
