When I read the original FDA regulations that mentioned "accessories" my mind went directly to pipes. Of course, would it stop there? We pipe smokers know that there are a ton of accessories we use like tampers, cases, lighters, etc.

PTC asked for clarification on whether pipes would be subject to regulation. The proposed rule excludes "accessories," and PTC argued that pipes fit this description.
So, as I understand it, the proposed regulations do not apply to "accessories," and the PTC wants to know if that includes pipes. If the feds say "no, we won't regulate pipes" we continue as usual, but if the feds say "yes," we're all in for trouble. Hmmm.

What kind of regulations would they impose? Warnings on pipe bowls? Materials list? Cancer in California label? How they are constructed?

Actually I should probably stop since this might give them ideas! lol

Most likely they'll just cook up some new tax and make it 40% of the selling price or something.

I didn't think I would we see the time when tobacco was slowly made illegal while pot was becoming decriminalized

And not just decriminalized. Pot is slowly but surely gaining legality and taking up a similar level of popularity to that of tobacco before all this mess started. Tobacco legislation has been frighteningly moving towards prohibition for a long time.

This stuff is scariest for retailers like Smokers Haven and we need to make sure that we're supporting them with our dollar.

Stock up while you can!

Not to the same extent it seems. There have been calls for legalising cannabis for years, briefly they lowered the classification but then they put it back up again.

They'll be screening people on the street to make sure they're high. "Nope, that's tobacco for sure, son. You don't show any trace of THC. Come with me."

Seriously, I couldn't care less if marijuana became legal or not. Decriminalize it and stop putting people in prison for smoking weed. However, it is frightening and hypocritical to be moving towards prohibition for one product and legalization for another when they're ingested in very much the same way (if we're referencing cigarettes) and are likely to produce similar deleterious health effects over time. I've met one pipe smoker in the last eight years who inhaled while smoking his pipe, to my knowledge. Delivery method is everything.

I sure hope that most of those requests are met. Sounds like a tough road to educate the FCC on the differences between tobacco products.

Hahaha, what they're proposing is what we already have in Sweden more or less. And what sas says about "some new tax" is probably true. Here in Sweden a 50 gram tin of pipe tobacco costs the equivalent of about 32 dollars, can you believe that! And all because of special tobacco taxes. Guess if I was happy when I found an american website that ship tobacco here in some way so the customs don't get their hands on my stuff!! ;)

This is about regulation of tobacco, not taxes. If it goes through as is, it will eliminate any new pipe tobacco from being developed and anything that was developed after april 2007 will have to be removed from the market. It may also ban flavoring in pipe tobacco which may eliminate most blends. This is the worst case scenario.
