Re: My first shot at pipemaking
Are you saying you regard the finish on this pipe as a glass finish? I've never tried using sawdust as a sanding grit.
Also, you should resize your pics before posting so that we can actually see them all at once.

Re: Influence vs. originality
I was talking with a friend the other day about the idea of a group of pipe makers getting together in a single shop and making pipes together. He said, and I agree, "The problem with that is that all of their work starts to look the same. They tend to be influenced by each other and the work r...

Re: Sweet RAD Pipe on eBay!
The pipe is mine. It was an ASP POY around 2004 or 2005, I can't remember. I can tell you that the pics exhibit some sort of a bizarre distortion and have nothing to do with the actual shape of the pipe. The shape was much better than those pics show, but it wasn't great.

George, they get dull for the same reason that razor blades get dull cutting your beard, or pocket knives get dull whittling cedar. It don't seem right, but that's the way it is. Actually, the mechanism is not the same, which is why I asked a group of white coat & clipboard guys. Razors and poc...

Re: The ultimate turning tool
You know what I hate? I hate when someone posts about a fantastic new pipe making tool they have found, and then, like some smug smartass, they tell us to use Google to find the fucking thing.
Post a fucking link.
Ridiculous.

I would also go with red and black palm in the first pic. A pic of the end grain would tell us for sure. Rad I will get an end grain pic, and see what I can do about the lighting. One of my CFL's popped on me, the largest wattage of course, when I was setting up my lighting so it didn't turn out ve...
Re: woods
What about pine? Is pine OK? Seems like the sap would provide a more "natural" bowl coating, and add an awesome flavor!

Re: drilling process
It will. Hell, you can take a straight edge and lay it on the image and see that there's plenty of room for a straight drill in the shank.SmokeyBert wrote:
It didn't appear to me that standard pipe drilling would fit the length and angles available with this shank style.

I don't remember saying this. The best definition from a few years ago was I think Rad's: If you are charging four hundred dollars a pipe and there's a line-up, you are making high-grade pipes.
Hope this helps.

Saw this over on Facebook. Just substitute Pipe Making for Photography and see if you recognize anyone  : One of the coolest things about Facebook is the ability to find people who share your interests.
