The difference between the two is simple. One has to work at his craft and the other can simply do it. Like a prodigy. As for both learning from from commonly used techniques, a true natural talent learns from example, very visual and physical people. As where the other will learn from standard lear...

Todd, I am not sure what motivated you to post this (organic staining with wine perhaps) lol! But I must say that it is sound advice in one respect yet unfair in another. Here is why I feel that way. There are two types of talent out there. One is taught and learned through tedious practice and dili...

The Dunhill Experience

Hi all, I have a subject that I would like to hear your thoughts on. Dunhill pipes. So lately I have been becoming increasingly obsessed with chimney stacked and standard billiard’s as well as Canadian shapes. And the obsession seems to have brought me to the famous doors of Dunhill. Why? I have no ...

Thanks for the tip! I will give it a try. As for any Dunhill's no sorry. The best I have as far as Dunhill's go, is a Savory's Curzon. Dunhill second. And it still needs to be reconditioned. If you are interested, let me know and I will give you a shout when it is done before I list it on e-bay. THa...

Dremel Moto Mini Lathe for sale / trade

Hey everyone, I am looking to sell / trade my Dremel Moto mini lathe. I bought it unused on e-bay a few months back and am now ready to upgrade. This is a great little lathe for stems, tampers, shank extensions. Plus any other small work you might need to do. I have all the tools including the facep...

I buy a estate pipes on e-bay and often times they are of course in e-bay condition… trashed! Now that is not a problem for me as I love to fully restore t...

The technique I was using to stain was to wear latex gloves to avoid and staining on my hands and oils on the pipe. I was applying Fiebing’s alcohol based leather dye. I made double sure to check it when I bought it on e-bay and the smell is undeniably alcohol. Now, after reading all your comments, ...

Thanks for the reply. As for the leather dye, I purchased some on e-bay and it was the brand mentioned on another thread here. I got a bright yellow and gave it a try. The results were varied. Blotchy, dull and by using the dabber that it came with, the pipe was covered in small fibers that I had to...

Alt staining.

Hello all, Reacently I have been experimenting with some alt. food grade items to use for staining and I would like to hear what others have tried and how it has worked? So far, I have used some organic Chianti and Merlot's that have produced some pretty amazing results. They are alcohol based after...

I see. So the difference between an oil finish and an oil curing is that when the briar is cured with the oil, it will not need to be oil finished? in addition, would the briar or wood used not feel greasy if it was cured in oil? at least to some extent? I can't imagine that it would not if oil was ...

Oil rubbed finish.

Hey there, I have a question. I have seen many finishes that are "Matt" finished and some say "Matt Finish". I know that bees wax used as a finish will give a nice low luster finish. But I have also seen "Oil rubbed" finishes and I am wondering what type of oil could be...

Thanks Alan. I knew about Pipe Makers Emporium but have not tired them or Pimo. I was hoping to cut out the middle man and not have to pay a mark up. I guess I can only do that by importing briar myself. And I don't mind doing it for the right price and amount, I have imported all kinds of stuff fro...

Briar buying?

Hello,

Can anyone give me info on where I would buy my briar? I have seen several places online but most are either import in large lots or blocks from other pipe makers. I am looking for a more direct sale type of purchase if possible and without importing. Any info would be great!

Thanks!

Eric.
