Sorry, Sasquatch, I said, “EXPERIENCED pipe makers may disagree with me . . .”
I also disbelieve that you’ve read every single word I’ve written. Nobody has that kind of free time.

Re: My Blog
George, your recipe does not include bacon cracklings. My dad used to say he was in college before he learned that “damn yankee” was two words. Thanks for the endorsement, though. Anyway, I call attention to today’s blog post only because it shows the techniqe of using a flat surface as refer...
My Blog
I’ve no idea how many here have been aware of my new(ish) website, www.howellhandmade.com, but starting the end of May I began posting a weekly blog entry. Many of them have nothing to do with pipes, but some of them were written specifically to help novice pipe smokers and may, tangentially, help n...

Re: Tape Residue
Duck tape. Thin: Ace. Thick: Gorilla. Thin has more adhesion for curves, may need to double up layers. Thick has more abrasion resistance for flats, saves time vs. layering. What adhesive remains rubs off easily. As I think about it, though, I only use duck tape to briar at the blast boundary. Here’...

Re: Import Band Saws
Yup, there’s your problem. And I’m with you, that is the MOST interesting capacitor failure I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen them turn brown or the discs bulge or pop apart but never seen one release the schmoo like that. By the by, I bought a 14” Jet at the Kennametal auction — it was packed full of green...

Re: New lathe. Size matters? - Please help!
Carbide has its place. HSS excels for form tools but I use carbide a lot. Metal lathe all the way.

Re: Stainless steel inverse spike
The stainless reverse tenon makes a very thin shank possible by removing the leverage of a partially inserted tenon from the briar end and placing it in the vulcanite end.

Re: Briar And Cane
Talk about stumbleupon . . . Geoff, you can get books at www.thelovelyreed.com. Amazon also, but you have to dig to find my offering at $50. Amazon would prefer you to buy it for $80 so it will never show my listing if you search, you have to “show all offerings.” And after burying my listing . . . ...

Ok, saw him on the Abom79 youtube series. Have you used him? Can he do .075” tall numerals?

Re: A&M Steel Stamps
I’ve been trying to contact Paul off and on for a couple of years. The last time I got stamps from him was probably about the time this thread stopped and he mentioned some health problems. I assume (and hope) he retired, anybody know? And where to get stamps now? Nobody seems to know what pipemaker...

Re: Import Band Saws
Oddly enough, George, the DoAll version of that saw is one of the things being auctioned as the Kennametal plant up the road is closing. I remember that sort of saw well from my college machine shop classes and it’s a wonderful tool. If you have space for it and enough work for it to earn its keep. ...

Re: Import Band Saws
Yes, Kurt, the spinning up by hand is part of it. I could (and probably should) buy another 9” benchtop saw. There have been times, though, when I would have liked to resaw a board. There are some pretty negative reviews of the HF 14”, but it seems some of those may be down to horrible assembly inst...

Import Band Saws
I guess they are all import, pretty much, nowadays. My benchtop 9” Delta is starting to drop the occasional hint that 20 years is enough. A few months ago I would have been about buying a better tool. Now, I’m about spending as little as possible to avoid being dead in the water. The Harbor Freight ...
