Re: Magnum Egg
Doug I understand what you were saying with wanting the pipe to look exactly like a smaller one, just scaled up. The thing is: we‘d try to make smaller pipes as elegant as sas is suggesting for your pipe if that left the pipes with enough strength to not break. Unfortunately that isn’t the case once...

Re: Hello everybody
Welcome.
I‘m a noob like you and happy you’re joining.
Read the forums carefully, especially the gallery.
BTW: a small Wood lathe is pretty nice for drilling and initial shaping. Looks like you’re set to start out nicely.
Have fun.

Re: Fish and horse.
A French wheel and a polishing machine can be run on an old electric drill... one you’re not going to use again because this will ruin your bearings. Still: that can be done for less then 100 altogether for a decent start. My mini belt sander is 70. I can link it. It’s not great but can be modified ...

Re: Fish and horse.
I believe this kind of pipe won’t see much action regarding actual smoking. That being said: they are awesome. I would like to be able to do this. I love classic forms. Todd and Michael encouraged me to try them years ago. I am progressing quite ok. So: yeah do those. But occasionally go back to som...

I‘m a little overly cautious at times.
That’s why I asked for someone else to chime in.

Re: Airway Drilling Help
when I first started, I tried drilling with an old drill press. it did not work at all. I found out I was able to drill a straight airway free hand more reliably than using the drill press. I agree that drilling on a lathe is a piece of cake. you know exactly where you're ending up with your drillin...

Re: TheGingerPiper Pipe No. 4 WIP
The drawing itself looks good. regarding the airway: I've seen you're drilling that at 4mm, then taper it in the stem to 1.5mm. maybe someone else can comment on that, but I'd prefer 3mm or 3.5mm. the reason is: if your tenon is 8mm, drilling through tere with a 4mm bit will make it too weak. Again:...

Re: I failed at making a pipe
@the ginger piper thank you. I am a complete beginner as well. I made 2 pipes from hobby blocks years ago using a dremel, files and sand paper. I then bought a belt sander and just kind of fooled around a bit, before my family life as well as my work as a self employed cpa prevented me from doing an...

Re: I failed at making a pipe
@flygare: thank you for your kind words. I wasn't going to post those pictures here, so I wasn't too carefull about taking the pics. Next time I will take better ones. the bowl was taller (and round) but I had to take off some to get rid of a huge pit. the bowl is just slightly tapered in the upper ...

I failed at making a pipe
Ginger Pipe Maker asked me for a couple of pics of a pipe I made, so here we go: https://pipesmokersdens.com/attachments/image-jpg.67854/ https://pipesmokersdens.com/attachments/image-jpg.67855/ https://pipesmokersdens.com/attachments/image-jpg.67856/ https://pipesmokersdens.com/attachments/image-jp...

Re: TheGingerPiper Pipe No. 3 WIP
That is some solid feedback. I have already received that from a buddy on Instagram and my next pipe will definitely either be a billiard or a poker. Also very true about changing my idea halfway through. Looking forward to checking out your pipes and thank you for the feedback. great I can be of h...

Re: TheGingerPiper Pipe No. 3 WIP
I'm only a hobby pipe maker getting started, so I'm not really qualified to comment on your pipe. I will say this though: to be able to comment on your pipe, it is necessary to clearly know what you were trying to achieve. Therefore, everyone around here will suggest you start making standard shapes...

Re: Vacuum cleaners
I picked up the cleaner and tried it: holy cow. yes, it is a little louder than I'd like it to be, but the effect is absolutely fantastic. I need to build something to use with my french wheel and lathe as well, but this is awesome. That being said: I got their showroom model, and they were promised...

Re: number of blocks in stock
Wayne's got that "nurse money." I have maybe 10 blocks in a drawer. I buy a small bundle at a time and make what I can from that and then order some more. I, however, am much less of a pipe maker than Wayne. Don't let his "hobbyist pipemaker" talk give you false impressions abou...

Re: Airway Drilling Help
Squaring a block on a disc sander isn't perfect.
if our block isn't absolutely square, the airway is bound to be a little off to the side.
and just a little off is enough to mess up the alignment.
