Re: How to pack flake?
i don't think you have to stress about rubbing it out fully. i rub out into broken flakes. flake is generally a little "wet" which i think is part of it's apeal- it has that fresh, sweet and pungent thing going on. i smoke mostly rattray's flakes (which are rubbed and probably why i don't ...

Re: Your Recommendations, Please
i like virginias. my favorite is rattray's old gowrie. it's virginia with perique (va/per). i suggest trying small tins of different types and see what you like. try a light latikia blend and some virginias. you can't go wrong with any rattrays or sam gawith. i love rattray's og, hal o the wynd, bro...

meerschaum care
i got a meerschaum for a friend who is new to pipe smoking. i told him to clean the stem/shank with pipe cleaners and to sweeten the bowl with salt and rubbing alcohol like with a briar pipe. is that correct? you have to clean out the cake in the bowl correct? what's the best way to do that? thanks....

Wood taste?
I have two cheap savinelli pipes (greek briar). One is a poker with a large bowl & the other is a small canadian. I really enjoy smoking the poker. It's produces great smoke with no added flavors. The little canadian has a wierd wood taste. I thought briar didn't give off a wood taste? The canan...

bulk vs. tinned
is tinned better than bulk tobacco? i love old gowrie and hal o' the wynd from the tin but wish i could get a whole lot of them. sound i get a bunch of tins or bulk? i've heard that tins have better flavor with the fermented character. is this true? also, i'm loving rattrays blends. any virginia lov...

rattrays question
i got two tins of rattrays- old gowrie and hal of the wynd. they look and taste exactly the same! they are both a light red color. i'm wondering if the old gowrie isn't really hal with the wrong label. i was expecting the old gowrie to be black. it's excellent tobacco and i'm really enjoying it. do ...

Re: Aging Tobacco and Storage
i've built up a little collection of tobaccos that i have in mason jars. i'm assuming you should store it out of direct sunlight and in a cool place? you don't have to worry about it drying out correct? the tobacco i buy seems to start out nice and moist which i like so i'm not too worried about it ...

Re: estate pipes a good buy?
thanks guys. i actually have the opportunity to see the pipes in person at a local tobacconist. i'm going to check out a couple dunhills and cavicchis that they have. i think they have one or two stanwells and savinellis too. i'd really like to get a cavicchi or two.

Re: lataka bomb & related questions for the novice...
i have some natural cav. i'll add a pinch to that when i'm feeling brave. that balkan blend smells like a bbq smoke pit! i only have one cheapo pipe right now. i think i should have one devoted to latakia and one for my virginias. oh well i'll have to smoke more to get the pine taste out! tough job ...
