Re: Learning from the masters
Why bother to learn from a master when you can pay the same price to learn from an upstart instead? TJ you will get better faster, make nicer pipes, and overall become a better pipe maker (faster) if you spend some time with someone who really knows what they are doing. Without doubt, one of the mo...

Re: It's Alive!
Thanks guys,
I made the bed out of 8/4 beech so it is pretty tough. When I did the final machining, I connected the two planks with spacer blocks and milled them as a unit so it's accurate as well.maddis wrote:That's pretty cool. Are those 2x6's serving as the ways for your lathe? What kind of wood?

It's Alive!
Just finished setting up my pipe making space. There is just enough room for my lathe, band saw, drill press and a work bench, everything I need! While I was at it I went through the lathe with new bearings, seals and belts and a thorough tune up. The band saw got a tune up as well with new tires an...

I'll see if I can give you an answer from the perspective of having been a woodworker. The common name for this wood I am most familiar with is shedua. Compared to other equitorial rain forrest woods it is not that toxic, it works well, wont dull your tools and isn't that expensive. Would I make a p...

I'd like to be included too.
One question though, does an egg shape count or should we stick to parsnips and such?

If you are looking for burl, you might try these people. I've gotten wood from them in the past and they were alway good to work with.

Re: stummel chuck for 9" metal lathe
I have the same problem with my wood lathe (a Conover) because it has the same spindle nose as your 9” South Bend. Here is a quote by Ernie Conover about the design of that spindle: “A Conover Spindle is copied from a South Bend 9" Lathe. It is a 1-1/2" DIA Spindle with 8 Threads per Inch....

IIRC it seems that you, Rad and Bruce were to blame for EVERYTHING, reguardless wether you were involved with the thread. It is kind of funny now but at the time it was truely nuts.ToddJohnson wrote:Sometimes, it's nice to see PURE CRAZY spill out in front of you...TJ

Hi Walt,
This is kind of an old post and it sounds like you have things pretty well under control, but if you are still looking for input I would be happy to help.

Re: Elbows
Hi caskwith,
I had the problem with cabinet making. Using a cordless drill to drive screws would put a lot of torque on my elbow. As jogilli said, magnesium helps a lot. Also, a neoprene elbow brace that you get a drugstore worked well for me.
Good luck,
Jim

Yeah, check out his left knuckles while he is test fitting the tenon! You would think he would shut it off after it bit him once. Cool videos, though.Sasquatch wrote:Basically everything in the Blakemar video is "How to make a pipe ass-backward and be unsafe doing it".

Re: Why can't my bandsaw cut like this?
Certainly, the Timberwolf blade is worth a try. I haven't found them to be that much better than Olson or Lennox but other people really like them. I think taharris gave you good advice to go with a hook tooth blade. You could do a thorough tune-up to make your saw work better, ie make sure the whee...
Re: Morta Egg
I think it turned out pretty nice. The inlays contrast well with the morta and you did a real great job on the shape. One comment, though. If you wanted to get a little smoother surface on the morta, you could use a small sanding block and sand with a "criss cross" pattern.

Re: Egg
Micah, Thank you for your comments! I don't think Wenge is any harder to work with than teak or imbuia. It is REAL dense so you need to use sharp tools, which will get dull a little quicker. The worst part about it is that you get a lot of little splinters. I imagine that if you use a crappy blade (...
Re: Egg
Thanks for the input R.H.. Things tend to look a little different in the photos than in reality, but it could be, as you say.
Thanks,
