Re: Jeff Gracik is a brave man. VERY brave.
Chalk it up to my ignorance. I've been a redditor for a while...and knew its ways. But, man, I don't think I was prepared for the negativity. Fortunately, there were lots of people who were intrigued and even introduced to hand made pipes because of it. And thank goodness MOST people seemed to like ...

Re: J Alan Design Tools
Hi Jeff, just wanted to say thank you for sharing the videos with everyone. I suspected the procedure for the military bit was as you demonstrated. I like to be 100% with everything I do and you came through for those of us that were unsure or just didn't have a clue. I really enjoy using your tool...

Re: J Alan Design Tools
Hey Guys, Thanks to Ernie for starting this thread. I appreciate it, man! And thanks to all of you for your interest in the products. I just posted a few videos to my youtube channel about them. Hopefully they answer many of the questions that have been asked. Here are the videos. gnDkGrhiDTA TzktIs...

VIDEOS--Metal Lathe use and safety
Hey folks, I know that I haven't been present on the board for...well, years. Between being a full-time pipe maker, father, husband, and member of my local community time for forums has become less and less. That being said, I ran across a few links to some videos that I wish I had seen when I first...

Re: Quick Poll
PME's Algerian briar is generally very good. I have a lot of it, and have used a lot of it over the years. I would not hesitate from encouraging folks to try it. If you'd like to try Tuscan briar without making a bulk order, call PME. It's pricey, but in my opinion is a good value. However, if you a...

Re: On buttons and things
tyler's absolutely right. A thin mouthpiece generally (or to me, at least) means how thick it feels between the teeth--i.e. right behind the button. A thin and/or short button is another thing. Most of my pipe stems fall in a narrow range of acceptable dimensions for all of their parts in the last i...

Ernie,
I've had great results with briar from Mimmo and Manno. Never once have I found a cavern like those sometimes found in Yazid's.

Re: ugly ebonite
wow. I ignore a thread topic because doesn't sound interesting and when I finally crack it, I see this. Nice. FWIW, I've bad ebonite from Meike on two separate occasions. The first was too soft and the second was filled with micro-inclusions. She's replaced one and I've still got to return the other...

Re: Stem Styles
I'll third calling Tim. He was the first pipemaker I ever talked with. He sold me my first briar and supplies. He also generously gave me several hours of his time over the phone several times filled with tips and cautions. Well worth the call, if only to chat with an American pipemaking legend. Bes...

Re: Epoxy Notes (Conap K-22 Black EasyPoxy)
Mike, you're over thinking this. I've made hundreds of pipes and have used many brands and bottles of epoxy. I have had curing issues exactly two times--both from too-old epoxy that I should have pitched anyway. I use System 3 brand 5 minute epoxy, squeeze two similarly sized blobs onto a business c...

Re: Connecting an air compressor
I'm currently working with UCSD researchers who are developing a way to transmit compressed air without piping or tubing. I have a transmission box attached to globe valve on my compressor, and a receiving box on my cabinet that restores the transmitted waves to compressed air form. That's what you'...

Re: Zinsser Spray Shellac
While we are on the topic of finishing, here is a site for those of you looking for carnuba wax. http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/wax/wax.html The price is great here, unfortunately, in flake form. Melting a ton of flakes and making it a bar is more work/time than I need to invest. Is there a bar s...
