yes smoke it then carve it. i believe smoking it cures it somehow, maybe the drilling as well.

there is a bush in California that has the same properties of this wood, its called manzanita ive made quite a few pipes from it and i like the taste of the wood

a mix of my friends homegrown and i little bit of spearmint leaves in a cutty

dont even dry it, just find a living manzanita and cut off a branch with good curved growths and drill along the length of the pieces of the branch you want, then smoke out of it as soon as possible.
ive done that and none of the pipes ive made have ever cracked.

i like the taste of manzanita when smoked the best way i would say to get it is harvest it yourself

i havent used arbutus but i have used manzanita its pretty much the same thing what seems to help me with the cracks is working with a freshly cut branch as soon as possible and smoking out of it as soon as possible ive made quite a few manzanita pipes and none of them have cracked using this method
