Re: Etiquette for commissioning a pipe
Not really. It's more a "pity buy" sort of situation when someone buys a pipe from you.

Re: Vauen Purism Inspired
Sas got it. It really needs a consistent taper along the top and bottom lines of the shank. On the top, from the very front of the bowl to the bit. And on the bottom, from the bowl to the bit. Them you get rid of the bit of bulge in the stem and the lines will be much cleaner.

Re: Etiquette for commissioning a pipe
1.I just made 6 Bings to get a smooth. The guy asked for a smooth, he got it...period. Took me about 3 minutes to sell the others I had to blast. No big deal. Ultimately I won't take a commission that I know I can't sell to someone else if A. the finish ends up different than the customer wanted or ...

Re: 80 gram super-premium pipe, .250" non-reinforced tenon..
I am curious how you manage workholding for a tenon replacement on a tapered stem like that.   I know how he does it. But I was sworn to secrecy before he let me into his shop for the first time. It was one of those old school Masonic Lodge ritual type deals too....I'm b...
Re: Juma?
Atlas Billiard Supply sells it. I think their website is cuestick.com. It's a thermoset plastic. Works a lot like Ebonite, but it won't oxidize. The black isn't a true black, but I still like it. It's about all I've used as the white bands on "Scottie" pipes (though I did just switch to th...
Re: Egg?
Since this is something I struggle with myself:
I think the ring could be a bit smaller. It's a touch too wide (sticks off the pipe too much). Try sanding the next one down a bit more.

Re: Egg?
No magic lines. Shape-wise, I think you nailed it. The me isn't a fan of... colored stems (except tortoise shell).....but those are more a matter of personal taste than right or wrong. Good job! ^^^^This is why I make so many colored stems. I can see George across town rolling his eyes and asking &...

Re: Good Briar Block Selection
I get most of my briar directly from Manno. They cut blocks specifically for me. However, it took me 5 years to get to that point. And doing it any sooner would have been a waste of money for me. I still get quite a few Mimmo & Makis blocks from Steve and there is an advantage in doing so. Steve...

Re: 19th Annual Kansas City Pipe Show
It just kind worked out that way. We usually don't get too many smooths that are entered in the contest every year. I had a smooth that I didn't enter as I thought the blast was a touch better.

Re: Replacement stem making A to Z (instructional video set
Tim West's machinist father-in-law used to make them, then he aged out. I've heard that someone obtained the design and is making them for Tim again, though. Can't recall his name---a tall, cowboy type guy from Wyoming if memory serves---but Tim can both confirm and get you in touch with him if it'...

1/16" drill bit in my dremel. When I open the funnel the sides just end up perfectly round. I am a God so I can do it right the first time....every time. I have a round needle file that I got from ottofrei.com. It is 1/16" in diameter and is very good at keeping the height of the slo...

Re: Making a stem on a wooden lathe
The only thing I use is a wood lathe. It will take quite a bit of practice to be able to reliably turn a tenon with hand tools. I would suggest getting an Easy Wood Tools square cutter with the straight sides, not the radius. It'll make your tenon work a lot easier. As far as turning the profile, ju...
