Re: Danish Style Apple 1st of 2017
Nope still in it. Even have a web page now but it's pretty basic. Not really focused on selling still more of a very part time pipe maker as I do still have my day job. I have been making a few classics as well, lovats, princes, billiards, etc. The site is http://richardfriedmanpipes.com How have yo...

Danish Style Apple 1st of 2017
My latest is this stubby 5" long Danish style apple with a boxwood ring. The stem is black juma, a great material to work with, softer than ebonite and nonn-oxidizing. Comments and critiques welcome. http://richardfriedmanpipes.com/images/apple/r.jpg http://richardfriedmanpipes.com/images/apple...

For me the bleached white moon rusticated one is just totally unique and cool. Curious to know if it will color in with smoking

Re: KC NAC Pipe Contest Flop
I guess I was not clear. I put this pipe up here after deciding not to enter it into the pipe carving contest. This was due to a screw up on my part when polishing the stem. I broke the tenon. I am too much in the short strokes of getting my boat ready to go to Alaska in a few weeks for my real job ...

Oh, by the way, we do have as close family with our first grandson. Any spare time I can get these days is reserved for family time. (or a few minutes of on line fun).

Re: KC NAC Pipe Contest Flop
Richard I meant to ask you on Friday night - why not just make a new stem, non-repaired? It's obviously easier to work the pipe as one piece, but on the other hand, in terms of shaping, the stem is a separate entity on this type of pipe. I thought of that but there is NO TIME,,, we have a 96 foot b...

Re: KC NAC Pipe Contest Flop
Thanks Tyler. With the posting of this pipe here, that ship has already sailed. I will try to make an entry for next year.

KC NAC Pipe Contest Flop
I attended the St. Louis Pipe Show a few months ago, where I had the pleasure of getting to know some of the gracious gentlemen of the Kansas City Pipe Club. They prevailed upon me to enter their North American pipe carvers contest to be held in June. This year the shape is in the billiard family wi...

Collectors ongoing debate on pipe values -
This question was asked on another pipe smokers forum: "At base, I am troubled by the concept of value - an inherently subjective notion. I can 'see' the value in the artistic output of certain established makers - Vollmer & Nilsson, Brad Pohlmann, Manduela - for example. I know why their w...

Re: The mighty buffer
It takes practice but secure tight grip with light touch is key. Most tend to hold with fingertips to achieve a light touch but that invites disaster. I use cousin Brucie's idea of finger in the bowl a lot as an additional safety precaution. Also I find keeping the point of contact with the wheel at...

So are we to post our billiard entries here for review and critique here or do we all keep our submissions secret from one another? Being a newb, I am just asking.

Re: Bamboo shank and rings on the ends
The ring does more than simple looks. It also stabilizes and contains the ends of the fibers of the the bamboo where it has been cut off as well as presenting a less easily compressed channel at the end for the tubing. It is a fussy detail but to my eye gives the pipe a more finished, buttoned down ...

Re: Pipemakers, craftsmen? Artists? Engineers? Bodgers?
Wow, haven't ever seen that whale/propoise, or whatever, with that holder before, absolutely stunning and brilliant! You're right, that's art. All credit to the artist, Michael Parks. This is a pipe I commissioned. It took two years from conception to finish. It was conceived as a northern Canadian...

Re: Pipemakers, craftsmen? Artists? Engineers? Bodgers?
It all depends on what kind of pipes you make. To be an artist you first have to learn techniques and then impart creativity and originality in to what you make. Art or craft, both noble and worthy pursuits. It is just a matter of which you want to be. If the pipes you make are faithful versions of ...

Re: should this be blasted?
My bias is toward smooth pipes. For me, a few black pinpoints are just fine. Now if they are black PITS then it is a no-brainer..blast away. If the grain is otherwise beautiful with a few black spots, I prefer a dark contrast stain strategy to camouflage the dark spots. IF the grain is exceptional w...

Re: Bent Apple
I don't care what the naysayers say or don't say. I say I like this one quite a bit. It is reminiscent of a classic author but with a Danish lean. I like the substantial shank and bit with the "S" curve. Looks like it would feel good in the hand. Placement in the block looks spot on. I do ...

What happens if you end up making a pipe that you would rather keep than trade?
Just saying. I guess you put it up in the gallery instead of here

Re: 2014 Pipe In The Hat Trade.
Thanks on that. I am in the midst of getting our boat ready for our upcoming charter season in Alaska. Our northbound departure is scheduled for May 3. Thus, I am not sure I will be able to get back into the shop with enough focus to make a prince of sufficient nobility for this august group. Perhap...
