The chef he is referring to is the "Swedish Chef" from the Muppets. Possibly the best recurring character.

Re: The Pipe of The Golden Heart
I have actually thought about termites as a way of making curved holes... Curved holes...ohh curved holes... how can I drill you? This time around, I shaped the stem rough, then, using a jewelers saw with a tiny kerf, I cut the stem in half, tracing a dark band in the wood so that the glue line wou...

Re: Google Hangouts
I know I don't post much, but I read the forum with my morning coffee daily. I'd love to see more people on G+, as I've been there a while and haven't seen more than a few people that I know do much of anything.

Re: USA Domestic Hardwoods?
Anyone messed with any really dense woods, like dogwood? I'd like to try drilling and shaping, and all I have at the moment is dogwood and pecan. My brother once made a dogwood pipe. Had kind of a floral taste to it until it had a good layer of cake built up, but it won't burn out. That is THE best...

Re: USA Domestic Hardwoods?
I did whittle a decent serving spoon out of a pretty ugly bug-eaten piece of the dogwood. I just cut it oversize and worked around the holes. If I find out where my wife put it, I'll post a picture of that.

Re: 17,18 new pipes
I second the request for the wooden churchwarden stem tutorial. I have seen a guy do something similar on YouTube, but his were kinda crude. The video is below. I thought that the idea of drilling around curves was neat. I assume that you are drilling and then bending, instead of bending then drilli...

Re: Billiard with Stylized 'R' Symbol
Ocelott: I'm glad to know that the pipe was both mom/pop made and American-made. I may seek them out and purchase from them directly next time. Tyler: I assure you that I am not your daughter. :) I am actually an "IV", named after my dad and such, and it was only when my cousin named her d...

Billiard with Stylized 'R' Symbol
I just purchased a pipe on eBay because I found it attractive, and needed an example of a billiard to try to emulate (within my budget). Anyway, I'd like to know if anyone has seen this 'R' symbol, with the smoking pipe pointing to the left. I'll attach an image or two for example. I tried pipephil,...

Re: Dogwood Stummel
Wow. I hadn't really considered that it will need to be cured. (Did I mention I'm a total newbie?) I just did a quick search, and there are so many methods. Based on what I have read so far, your way appears to be one of the faster methods, only taking a few months of air drying after being boiled ...

Dogwood Stummel
A neighbor recently felled a thick dogwood of theirs, and allowed me to have some of the wood. It is a nice, tight-grained hardwood, with a slight pink-ish hue. I have only seen one pipe made from it before, and very little mention of anyone using this wood in general. I have uploaded some images to...

Re: Starting Out: Measure and copy?
I wish I could have the one in the picture to look at, but I may see if I can find one at a flea market or yard sale sometime soon. I agree that having something tangible would be a great asset for this.
Thanks for the advice and luck

Re: Starting Out: Measure and copy?
Those are lovely. I was hoping to try a bent billiard after I get the straight version down. I will compare these measurements to the other one, proportion-wise, and see how well they match.

Starting Out: Measure and copy?
Up to now, my experience in woodworking has been primarily whittling, with some dremel-ing and sandpaper-ing thrown in. I decided to make a pipe out of some dogwood that I found while walking the other day. After doing some reading, video-watching, forum-joining, and more reading, I decided that I s...
