Re: Any tips on selecting a tobacco?
Thanks for the advice and the blends you've mentioned. If you were to put together a "beginner" set for someone with one tobacco from each blend, what would you choose?
English, Balkan, Scottish, Virginia, Va/Per, Aromatic, Burley, Oriental

Any tips on selecting a tobacco?
What's a good strategy for narrowing down which tobacco blends/family suit my pallet? Are there questions I can ask myself to eliminate options? There are so many choices out there. I don't smoke every day so it takes me a while to sample many different tobaccos. My two favorites are WO Larsen Signa...

Etiquette for commissioning a pipe
A few related questions in no particular order: 1. Correct me if I'm wrong: if a very specific shape is wanted, is the probability of getting that specific shape is high if the buyer accepts a rusticated finish, the probability is lower if a sandblasted finish is desired, and the probability is even...

semi-burnt chamber repair plan critique
Picked up an estate pipe. Full bent and the previous owner apparently liked to let it hang which caused the shank side chamber wall to burn and loose material. Over-reaming also left gouges in the walls. No burnouts evident. I don't smoke this pipe very often but would like to prevent further damage...

Re: asymmetrical volcano
I'd be proud to have that in my collection. Nitpicking: a little more bend in the stem so that it's slightly more parallel with the rim.
Nice pipe.
Nice pipe.

Re: flake or spray shellac for amateur maker
Back on track: I mixed one part Zinsser Bullseye shellac (non-spray can) with 1.5 parts de-natured alcohol in my baby food jar. I then spread said mixture on some sample briar pieces with a pipe cleaner. Some stain came off but not so much to affect the look or even notice really. I buffed the piece...

Re: flake or spray shellac for amateur maker
So I gather either product will work. I suppose I'll make my choice based on which comes in the smallest container I can find. PS: While at the store looking at baby food jars to mix the shellac and alcohol in, and knowing I would eat said baby food to empty the jar, I chose the fruit medley instead...

Re: flake or spray shellac for amateur maker
Thanks Andrew, Sas, and Rad for the advice. Two products are available: Any suggestions? The Zinsser Seal-coat is 100% wax free so I'll assume this is what is preferred. http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=246 The Zinsser Bullseye isn't 100% wax free and I assume should be avoided. http://ww...

Re: flake or spray shellac for amateur maker
OK, can it is. Is there a specific label I should be looking for? Will I need to cut the pre-mixed can?

flake or spray shellac for amateur maker
Trying to determine which method I should use. I'm leaning towards Zinsser due to the eas of use. I'm finishing my first pipe and don't plan to quit my day job. I've gathered that flake shellac should be cut with denatured alcohol to about a 4 or 5-pound cut. The resultant mixture should be filtered...

Re: High new pipe prices - what the heck's going on?
There are pipemakers approached at shows, a briefcase full of cash is offered - "We'll take all these pipes, and everything else you make this year." Trouble is, the offered pay is about 1/2 of what you'd ordinarily want. Are there alternative motives to this or are they simply getting in...

Newb question: I assume your talking about the final, light stain layer and not the initial heavy stain layers?Ocelot55 wrote:Have you tried wiping the stummel down with denatured alcohol right after you apply the stain? It can do a lot to even out the dye.

Re: High new pipe prices - what the heck's going on?
Ease of payment, and visibility of pipes to new markets means more demand as well, but at the same time supply (for high-grade pipes) has not changed. In fact, with the loss of Bo, Barbi, the effective loss of Jess and slowing production of others, one could argue it has gone down. There are others...

High new pipe prices - what the heck's going on?
Hey guys, I've watched the price of handcarved pipes steadily going up lately which is why I thought I'd try my hand at making my own. When I started collecting/smoking pipes 8-years ago S. Bang were some of the highest priced pipes at $1000 and up. Lately new pipes from some artisand are easily adv...
