Before you spend $500+ for one of those tools if you decide to buy one, check out your local craigslist for metal lathes.Josh B. wrote:Im in need of a tenon tool like the pimo tool or the one tim west Sells or used to at least. Listen to Premal, Josh. I use a spinnable tenon cutter and get away with it because it's surrounded/supported by a lot of VERY expensive tooling that's super-rigid and highly precise. Using one with a Home Depot-grade Chinese drill press is an un-winnable situation, though. They are too flexy and sloppy in ways that can't be "tuned away" to produce a good result.
Asian lathes, on the other hand, CAN be used with success because lathes are inherently rigid, while DP's are not. Takes a bit of know-how, but the Web is full of info about how to tune them. Most of the pipe makers on this board use Asian lathes, in fact.
UFOs must be real. There's no other explanation for cats.

Listen to George, for once he is correct in advocating the use of a lathe!

Re: need a tenon tool
George is advocating for a lathe... the end is nigh.

Keep looking and broaden your search to local listings with universities surplus, ebay, garage sales, etc... Also be patient and save the funds up. A good old metal lathe can be purchased for under $1000.00 and will allow you to do so much more than just cut a tenon.Josh B. wrote:Id love a lathe but at the time my budget foent alloe for a lathe.
