Sorry for all the flak. I just realized that you are really looking for an animal free alternative very seriously. We had to poke some fun. It was too easy.
I think Danish Oil may be your solution for a nice finish that can be easy to apply. It is just a solvent and plant based drying oils.

Cheers Premal.
I was on holiday, not scared off. I expected some flak, having lurked on this board for some time, and have broad shoulders, so it's fine.
I was a turner before aspiring to pipe making, so have a fair bit of experience with oil finishes. I guess i was caught up in ideas about toxicity, and also wondered if it would leech with heat or mix with a carnuaba. Sounds like it is worth a go though. Thanks.

Whatever you do, don't get oil on the stem or you'll have stinky ebonite...

Re: Vegan shellac alternative?
Just give it extra drying time, and then it will take a polish much better. The oil only penetrates a few thousands of an inch so there is no worry about any toxins getting into the smoke.Oakbear wrote:Cheers Premal.

You might want to experiment with pure tung oil as well. Just make sure you don't get a "tung oil finish"...some of those don't even have any tung oil in them! I've been getting some really nice results with the stuff they sell at Woodcraft. Like Premal said, give it plenty time to dry.

Just make sure you don't use "tongue oil." Pretty sure that stuff's not vegan!

Pure Tung Oil takes about 6 months to dry.Ratimus wrote:You might want to experiment with pure tung oil as well.
