I messed up

Post by MmmPeace »

Ok here goes, I messed up. I recently completed my first pipe (pics to come this evening) I over ground the stem where it meets the pipe. Coming from a pen turning background with glue finishes I thought, I'll just fill the little gap with glue. Now my stem is glued to the pipe and I know that is no bueno. Did this just ruin my pipe? There is no glue in the pipe itself but as far as cleaning and maintenance goes... I realized what I had done but my glue is insanely fast setting and it was too late to undo. Live and learn I know but this is my first pipe so I feel like I wanna keep it for the long run. But if there is a way to remedy this please advise! I'd even pay somebody with the right tools to saw off the stem, remake and attach the mortise and tenon, but then it is no longer my first pipe, is this just crazy talk?

Acetone will cut CA glue, but you will have to be patient and apply it multiple times.

If that doesn't work you could try a heat gun.

I think that heat will soften CA glue, but I'm not 100% sure.

I am sure that heat will soften the stem. If you're lucky you may only ruin the stem.

Good Luck,

Thank you! Regardless I'm still gonna try and smoke out of it for the first time tonight after work, needless to say I am very excited!

I've had a few shop pipes where I super glued the stem in place on purpose and a couple years later, they're still stuck fast. If you're keeping it for yourself anyways, I'd say just leave it glued together. Otherwise you could try the acetone or heat.

Ok thanks guys. I smoked my first bowl through it earlier, I chose Lane Limited 1-Q (known at my local pipe shop as "jubilee") I was not disappointed! The pipe was very comfortable in my mouth and hand, not only was this my first smoke through this pipe, but my first smoke ever, that much more special through a pipe I made myself! Thanks for the help!
