pipe become darker while smoking it...

Post by ND Pipes »

I made my first pipe and this is the first pipe i started to smoke as new... It is a great smoker but i noticed that on the bottom of the pipe, the colour started to change a bit... the pipe started to become more darker at the bottom (where the heat is right now (filling it only up to a one third of the bowl))... is this normal that colours turn more intensive when "burning the pipe in".. the colours are a bit darker and more intensive form now only at the bottom of the pipe....

It's perfectly normal for a pipe to get darker as it's smoked.

It could also be that the bottom is too thin and starting to burn through. Is the coloring all in one spot?

no... complete bottom side of the pipe has got a bit darker colour and colours are more intensive... it looks nicer to me this way, i am only wondering because it seems to me that the shank will not become like that :)...

One other possibility is that tars are wicking through the grain of the wood in a certain direction - I've seen pictures of dark spots on pipes that were not burnout, but seemed to be more like capillary action in the briar. Certainly on straight-grained olive this happens. I sent a guy an olive pipe as a tester, and 6 months later he said it still smoked incredible, but that the front and back of the bowl were dark and blotchy, and this corresponded to the longitudinal grain axis.

hmmm.. this is intersting - thank You for this information...

in my case it seems more to be a case K.Huhn mentioned..... a normal thing.... (maybe i had it a bit more hot than it should be when first time smoked so I got my carnauba "roasted" :) )..... hehehehe....
