I'm looking for come critique here. This is the first churchwarden I've ever made. I went with a crazy white stem because I was out of ebonite. Cutting the acrylic was a pain, but once I learned how it wanted to play, it went fine.
Take a look and see what you think. Is it hideous?
Personal opionion.. sand the black off and stain it light brown..
General opion.. it's very nicely executed... your banding looks very nice and the pipe itself .. shape wise.. is excellent.
The color just doesn't bring out the full potential for me.. the pic you have showing the bottom of the bowl is almost spot on.. just from the side view it's off
I really like the stem man, that's a fine job you've done. Perhaps with the banding I'd like to see the black razor thin, it'd add a level of elegance to the design. HOWEVER I really think you've got something going with this design. Perhaps a different stain though, perhaps a lighter brown as above suggested. I think you should make another churchwarden though, I like the look you got goin.

I agree about the stain. Right now, everything but the briar pops.
What are the dimensions?
The stummel is just a bit bigger than a golf ball and the total length is 7".

Ah hah! I didn't think it looked long enough to be a churchwarden.
What are the actual length parameters for a warden? I've always thought it was 9" and up.

I've no idea. I just made it shorter because the stummel was larger than what I thought a true churchwarden should be, so I decided to try something different. I've heard some people call it a "princewarden".

Who knows?
Well whatever it is, it's a great pipe with excellent proportions. Really nice work, Brian. I'm really impressed by your work lately.
Nice semi-churchwarden. I agree with what's been said so far. The stummel needs another color and the black band separating the copper could be a tad thinner. I would add that the last section of white could be thicker so it's not so close in thickness as the copper. That would have made the copper banding stand out more which is the part I really like the most.
Another thing I noticed is that the last section of white looks like it is reflecting the black Delrin tenon. Is it the same material as the rest of the white stem? If so, maybe an integral tenon or white Delrin would have worked better.

Actually, it's not copper. It's an orange-ish acrylic. The tenon isn't delrin either. It's just a normal tenon cut directly on the stem. What you're seeing is the stummel color and black ring color bleeding through the translucence of the white ring. not ideal...
I might work on the stain a bit more actually. I initially thought about leaving it an almost natural color, but with the grain so nice, I had a really hard time not contrast staining it.

Ah, okay. It's the black from the ring separating the orange. It makes the last white ring look like a different material. Maybe it isn't as noticeable in person. It's nice work nonetheless.

Yeah, I haven't decided what to do with that. I really like the opaque-ness of this material. Sometimes it even looks like horn, but it does take on other colors pretty easily. I thought about doing an ultra thin sliver of solid white between the black and mother-of pearl, but I'm not sure that would look that great either.
Hello,
that is a great looking pipe, i like it.
Normaly i don´t like mouthpieces if it isn´t black or cumberland, but here it looks great.
personally i would not need the orange ring, but this is a matter of taste.
Very good job.
Greetings Tommi

Thanks Tommi,
The original stem I cut only had one black ring which (to me) didn't transition the stummel to the stem well. It felt too much like a hard transition. I'm not sure if orange was the best color to choose, but I'm limited on what I have to work with I need to buy more stuff!
