Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
Wallie. This could possibly be the most normal pipe you've ever made.

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
First, I want to say that you all are awesome pipe carvers! Seriously, I am jealous and working to better myself at this craft.
Second, I can't believe I missed this one!
We should make an email list for 2013/14 PITH.. I surely want in, and by then I should have a few more pipes under my belt. And we all know October will come sooner than we think.

My thoughts exactly! Still pretty darn beautiful pipes though! The Smoking Yeti wrote:Wallie. This could possibly be the most normal pipe you've ever made.
I'm nearing completion aswell. Made a new stem after I started disliking the last. Shaping is done and so is most of the sanding. I just need to finish sanding (400 & up), start buffing and finish the rustication...

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
yes! it's done!
the finish is drying as we speak. I managed to break the shank off hile finishing so I had go extend it with an extra piece of olive, but everything turned out pretty good:

Alas! This shape is no fun, I tell ya. I reckon those two Cavaliers I made are the first but definitely the last ones, too, that'll leave my workshop.![]()
Both of them are made out of halfmoons from Spain, so I call them
The Spanish Gigolos.
Although both pipes base on the same shape-idea, I tried to show two different types of the grain only by shaping the bowls slightely different. That - at least - worked out quite well. The rest was shit.
The lad next to me on the list gets the fair choice to pick the less bad one.
Cheerio!

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
I have my cavalier finished, the shank is curly maple, stem and bottom plug are ebonite.

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
wow, that is another very nice pipe. I am really pushing it to get mine done in time, this flu really screwed me up.

Another very different approach to cavaliers than most, and a very nice one at it!D Marshall wrote:I have my cavalier finished, the shank is curly maple, stem and bottom plug are ebonite.

Big bummer, I have just been told I have to work all weekend. Which means I cannot finish. I could finish If we moved it up a week, I know we have in the past, but I don't expect it. Between the flu and this last minute overtime, I just can't make it. I am really upset about it, I have looked forward to this since I first joined the board. But I understand if we stick to the date.

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
Well, here is my entry!
A Rhodesian interpretation with end cap made from moose antler.
I was playing with the thought of making a Bullmoose from a bull moose antler but yeah....the result was not as I envisioned it to begin with. After a few twist and turns I am at least somewhat satisfied with the end result even if it is not your ordinary cavalier pipe!
To whom ever gets it, please review it and then, if you are not happy, you can at least use the antler material for something else

I also saw that my name is not on the list yet, could someone fix that?
Best regards, Jon

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
@ rev: How long do you need to finish? I think if you can finish it between the 4th and the 8th you'd be alright, however I don't want to spring that on the group without some feedback. Can you at least post a pic of your progress so we can see how far along it is? What does everyone else think? I vote we keep rev in until Friday the 8th.
@JonBood: Looks like you could kill someone with that pipe! I've always loved antler/horn accents and the bulldog/Rhodesian bowl is a nice touch.
In other news, I will publish the official sending list sometime on Monday or Tuesday, depending on how many folks have posted their results. If we vote to keep rev in it will affect the persons immediately before and after him on the list so make sure you guys arrange appropriate shipping dates.
The deadline draws nigh, gentlemen! I'm going to try to finish another cavalier before then. I don't know if I'll make it, but I'm going to try.

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
Well the 9th would be better for me, as I would have Saturday just in case, but I could post pictures on Friday before midnight if that is the decree
I can post some pictures of my progress tomorrow thursday and you can make an ultimate determination.

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
I've got no problem extending to the 9th so Rev can still participate. I'd also love to see a progress photo.
Edit: I'm down with the 9th.

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
I agree. I suspect most will take a few days to get to the post office, not to mention the time (and cost...) it takes to actually get them to their destination. If Rev's pipe is at a failproof stage (final sanding/staining/buffing) I see no problem. If it's still in rough shaping and changes are quite real something might go wrong (breaking shanks and all that) I'm a bit more doubtful.
If vote to keep Rev in untill the 9th providing we see some pictures before the 4th...
@Jon: pretty thing she is!
