I have been looking at this shape and trying to study what makes a cutty, from what I have learned they are based on the clay pipe which is why some of them have the heel on the bottom, but what I have noticed about the shape is that the top of the bowl is either parallel with the shank or it is perpendicular to the tobacco chamber, is there a specific way for this? or is it left up to the carver? I kind of like both styles but I was just curious as to which is considered the "classic cutty"
edit: oh I forgot to mention some seem to have straight sides and others tend to be more rounded almost "eggish" (if thats a word) LOL

Re: The cutty
I think part of the cutty look is that the bowl really looks tilted, so to me, it's a thing where you leave the top of the bowl perpendicular to the walls and tilt the whole thing forward, as it were. I do take it as a "clay shape". A tiny, delicate egg, balanced out on a branch.

Re: The cutty
FWIW i agree with sas about the egg on the branch. i look at a nice rounded top and bottom of the bowl for a balanced cutty. i actually like both styles of bowl orientation, perpendicular to the bowl and parallel to the shank. im currently working on one that has a great egg shape and is perpendicluar to the bowl, its also without the foot, so i dont know if that makes it a belge or what? i personally am not a fan of the foot but can appreciate it in that style. either way a cutty is difficult to get just right and have a balanced look. all the ones i made have been less than satisfactory so im working on the shape to hone my skillzzzz
best of luck to you!

Re: The cutty
I don't think the top has much bearing on whether or not it is a cutty. The foot is rather traditional, but was used to strengthen a clay heel, which isn't necessary for briar. I cut them a few different ways, seems like a personal pref thing.

Re: The cutty
Before I made my first cutty I thought it to be an easy shape. I mean, really, it is an egg shaped bowl with forward cant on a straight stem. Now after a couple of tries, I'll say it is one of the more difficult of the std shapes.
Re: The cutty
Id say a belge is a forward canted billiard whereas a cutty (foot or not) has more of an egg/acorn/dublin styled bowl.
