Is it safe to assume this morta pipe is sand (or crushed unicorn horn) blasted? I am very much unfamiliar with morta; working on that now with my google-fuAlden wrote:[url=http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/axfig ... a.jpg.html]

The texture in a couple of the pictures reminds me of checkered hand grips like these:

I showed these pictures to my wife and it took her breath away a little bit, mini-gasp. Thought you might like the feedback.

If I may ask, what is the tool and the technique for achieving that ringed layered look? Senatorv posted one with much deeper rings last year and I've tried and failed, at the expense of a nice bit of briar, to duplicate this texture.

It's sandblasted. The softer wood is removed by blasting while the harder grain remains (if done properly), which this one definitely IS!

Malory all the way, even though he lived before tobacco came to England.
That's one sweet pipe.

Really? That is very surprising. I had no idea that the natural rings of the wood would stand up to sand blasting. I've never tried it before...back to the bench.
