You're scaring me, Norm. I've been focusing on getting the bamboo bit dialed, figuring I could get at the sitting bit after..... shoot.

I figure how difficult getting it to sit is going to depend a lot on the shape chosen. Those stubby pokers made of half a log which seem in vogue in some circles pretty much sit if you throw them in the air and let them land.
Basic stuff i have been thinking of is...
The bigger the contact area with the table the less precise the point of balance needs to be. Having said that i don't think bamboos take well to large bowls, as they are generally light delicate pipes.
The longer the stem the greater the leverage against the bowl. Having said that you don't really see bamboo nosewarmers.
The greater the bend the less leverage. A fully bent will be less likely to tip to the stem than a 1/4 bent.
If you are struggling with bent shapes sitting, bear in mind straight pipes can sit too, as the stem can take the weight without the balancing act. Dunhill shape straight billiards often do.

Hello all! Just registered, very excited and would love to play! As long as someone doesn't mind receiving a freshly extruded, bamboo adorned pipe turd...

I do not think anyone would like to receive a pipe turd. However, if you study and learn and practice, you should be able to contribute a respectable pipe. How long have you been making pipes?

I have been making pipes for about a year, I've made six pipes, two I would show to others comfortably though I would not dare to post them here. I've only worked from kits, but have a bandsaw and metal lathe on the way. I thought the end of July would be do-able to focus on one nice pipe I could get hands-on feedback about. I simply meant that I know my current skills aren't up to some of the work I've seen posted on the forum.

Though I am not a huge fan of bamboo I would certainly like to give it another go (the first go round didn't turn out too pretty). If it is ok I would like to participate.

finster, Tony, you've both been added. Sorry for the delay. I'm in the Coast Guard and don't always have internet access. Welcome!

I am glad to say I have added another bamboo shanked pipe to My personal collection. Three more and I will have a seven Day set, none of them are sitters, Norm.

Well, as much as I wanted to be involved, I am afraid I have to bow out. Please remove me from the list. My schedule is going to be too hectic and I've been messing around with the bamboo a few times now and I don't think I am at a place where I would want to punish someone by giving it to them. It's just not co-operating very well for some reason.

So is Anyone making any progress? I think I have one getting close but I have to see if I can make the stem light enough for it to sit. I am trying to save the gluing until the end but that makes things difficult too. The bamboo is tough enough but Who added the sitter part? What's wrong with a nice poker, Norm.

Mine is coming along interestingly. I have tried something a little different and it's coming along nicely. I'm excited about it.

Mine is getting there. Rough shaped and ready to fit the bamboo to the stummel. So far haven't run into any flaws so might be a smooth.

I've got my materials together, and it's all sketched out on the briar block. But what with all the projects in front of it, I won't start putting it all together until the end of this month.
