is a bent prince a bend in the stem or bent shank? I don't think I consider a prince, a prince without the long semi bent stem

Yo Scottie,
As per usual when the PITH gets started there are lots of calls for clarifications in what can and cannot be and what is and is not.
I hereby petition the court for a ruling.
Personally, I consider a "bent" pipe to be one where the angle between the axis of the bowl and the axis of the shank is less than 90 degrees.
The poll ended with a call for a "straight" Prince. Research on the shape will show both straight and slightly bent STEMS. Not to say that it does not exist, but I have never seen a classic Prince with a bent shank.
I would respectfully suggest that the definition of this PITH be a Prince, period. And as such, either straight or bent stems will be allowed.
The defense rests.

I've thought about this myself, and would counter that we should probably keep things pretty darned close to straight. Sure maybe a degree or so of bend in the name of elegance, but the prince is traditionally only made straight- often with a bend in the stem.

Redi & Yeti ---

You're right as far as I know. I've seen a lot of Princes over the years, and have never seen one that had an angled shank. Bent stem or straight stem, the shank/bowl junction itself was always straight.

Okay, I'll be the one to disagree.

While I think 90% of Prince shapes do have straight drilling (ie bowl and draft hole axes at roughly 90 degrees), I think a Prince can also be drilled slightly bent, maybe at 85 or 80 degrees.

Look at this Savinelli on smokingpipes

Looks like the drilling is not at 90 degrees to me, and yet it sure as hell looks like a Prince.

Just to go on the record, I'm fine with saying only straight Princes for this PITH, but I wanted to point out that bent Princes do exist.

I have consulted with my magic ball and have come to the conclusion that this year's PITH should be a straight stummell. If you want to bend the stem a little, have at it. This will keep it a little more defined and keep us all headed in the right direction with a shape that is going to be a challenge.

And Red......next time go through the proper proceedures and make sure you come all the way into the fortune teller's tent and don't just stand at the door like you're scared

Wait, are we supposed to be shopping? Maybe this is why every year I get fewer and fewer phone calls around Christmas. ;)

Hm.

Now comes the quasi-philosophical question: Does an "interpretation with Italian flair" made decades after the originals constitute an authentic Prince, or is it just a "prince inspired" pipe in the same way a Castello billiard isn't really a billiard?

That one definitely has an angled shank, though, so thanks for the pointer. It's the first I've seen. (bending the lines clunks everything up, imo, but that's hardly a surprise  )

I finished this up the other day. I gave it a shot and hopefully it fits the prince shape. Sorry, for the poor Picts.

I'd say that pipe is more of an apple. I think of a prince as a bit more squat, and the shank comes out straight- this shank feels like it contributes to too much of a bend in the stem. Another thought, is the stem. I think a solid unwavering line to the button would fit this better than a fishtail. Nice work though- the texture looks very tactile. Good stuff!

I agree with everything Micah mentioned, and would include that the stem appears too short.

Nice apple, though!

I will rework the stummel and see what I come up with. I had no reference for the stem besides measuring prince shapes from my screen but maybe it's too short but I am unsure. Thanks for the comments.

Just took a couple quick picks of a 60's GBD prince I have. This is what I plan to model my entry after, with the exception of maybe blasting rather than smooth. This IMO is a prime example of a classic English made prince.
