All of the above! It's also on the sign above the entrance to his tree house...right next to "NO GIRLS ALLOWED."

This is one of those things that I would call stylistic. Dunhill (et al.) does it, but most of the "artisanal" crowd is a little underwhelmed by it. The domed rims looked a bit comical to me at first, but now, everything else just looks unfinished to my eye. I don't think I've done a "classic" without one in 4 years. It's almost universal in the Danish style, and if a maker doesn't care about the Danes, then it's not worth worrying about. The more I discuss style, the more I feel that "The Danes do it that way," is about the most compelling argument one can make. (or conversely, "The Italians don't do it that way" - that's for you, Bob )

I guess I should put one of Tyler's signs above my tree house door too. It'll go nicely next to "Boyz Rule!"

It does look good here. I think the wider rim is needed (like here) for it to look its best.

Since I want to be as cool as Premal even though I fail at it, I'm coining a new acronym: TDDT "The Danes Do That". I'm obviously being a hyperbolic smart-aleck, but there is a hint of feeling behind the mottos I just made up. (I mostly posted for Chas's benefit because I've been given him grief for dishing lately.)

I think we have seen clearly the last few weeks the objectifying of competing styles. I've begun think about it this way.

To me, the Dunhill/English style is akin to a military parade: sharp (Hup! Hup! hup! March!), hard, no-nonsense, masculine. Does it move you to look upon a military parade? Sure.

The Danish style is akin the ballet: lithe, graceful, flowing, feminine. Does it move you to look upon it? Sure, and in a totally different way than a military parade.

I tend to think of English-y pipes as ruggedly handsome and Danish-y as beautiful.

If you're still not thinking I'm a kook (or still don't, after all these years), then let me add this. Because of the characterization of the above, I tend to think of the English aesthetic as functional and practical: it's a refined tool. I tend the think of the Danish as the pursuit of beauty over practicality: it's a functional sculpture.

The fun to me in pipe making is not getting a pipe to feel good in the hand (this has always been an odd descriptor for a pipe to me), to be easier to ream, to smoke well while driving in your horse and buggy, or to match you cummerbund and tie at a gala. (NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THOSE THINGS!) Instead, I care about beauty. Of course, I want the pipe to smoke as well as possible, but that's relatively easy to accomplish. And within smoking as well as possible, there is much creative beauty to be explored. That's what I like to do, and that's why I make pipes.

To bring this back to the point, let me comment on dishing. It is a very English move. It hardens a pipe and makes it look more machine-like, IMO. Tobacco funnels in better so it's practical. What I hope doesn't happen with a feature like dishing, is for people to read recent threads about it and think it finishes out a pipe the right way, or makes it more sophisticated. Meh, sort of, maybe, and with some styles of pipe it matches and gives a more finished look. I recently saw a pipe that had very Danish line, a Danish style shank cap and stem, and a wide dished rim. It was jarring and ruined the pipe, IMO.

There is more to say to be clear, but I'll risk being misunderstood for the sake of furthering this conversation.

So, Tyler, you're saying my pipes are ugly and you don't like them, and Ernie's pipes are nice and you DO like them? I just wanna make sure we're all on the same train here.

The way I read it is that Tyler doesn't like you because you're Canadian, and likes Ernie because he's German.

SAS, he's saying english styles are more tight ass and stuffy, while Danish style pipes are more openly whoreish. I guess the italians don't give a damn and the French, AH, the French.
