Re: My first shot at pipemaking
I for one, find it hard to believe you don't have a sock puppet? The best helper you will ever have, loyal and if something goes wrong, you can blame the puppet. You can talk to it , run ideas buy it. You can even drink with it.

Re: My first shot at pipemaking
So for this one... I would find a picture of a pipe that is close to yours and copy it as closely as you can. Don't worry about fitting a stem to it. A tomato or author is a pretty close fit.
Get yourself a pipe kit and go to town. That way you'll come out of this with a smokable pipe!
then you can smoke one creation while you carve the next one!

I would agree with the advise given. Shoot Vermont Freehand a PM and get a few pipe kits from him. I'm sure he can even set you up with one that you would be able to get the pipe you posted out one.
As far as using woods other than briar, here is a website one of the guys here gave me when I first started.

I think Tyler is simply saying, "Be nice."
Sakrin is taking it in excellent stride but not everyone who has had the courage to put their first pipe up for critique can handle that kind of ribbing. If we are what we say we are, a welcoming community who encourages new comers, we have to start behaving like we want them to stay.
Re: My first shot at pipemaking
Don't poke at someone (or their thread) trying something new. It takes time, effort and guts to post something here. Turning a first timer's thread into a comedy session can be misconstrued and hurtful.
If it's Huber trying something new... that's different

It got so bad for him early on that he even changed his board name. (Like he thought he could sneak that by us.)andrew wrote:

UFOs must be real. There's no other explanation for cats.
Re: My first shot at pipemaking
I don't mind the comedy, i find it amusing. It takes a lot more, to enrage me. As for calling me names and such, you ought to have heard my wood supplier when i asked from him to get me briar, that was something, that man has a range of curses containing my name that is unending. I still owe him money from the last shipment. LoL I'm, reading boys, reading my eyeballs off. And working. Predrilled stuff is OUT of the question.
As for material toxicity, i got a perfect way for disposing my mother in law..

No problem. Get with Steve (Vermont Freehand) and have him send you some briar and stem (or rodstock if you want to jump right in to cutting your own stems too). He has the best prices and customer service. He usually even has some cheap blocks that are perfect for practicing on.sakrin wrote: Predrilled stuff is OUT of the question.

Second atempt at nasty sock puppeting, still partial effort, non finished. Black Locust.

A for the shape, i really wanted to heed an advice given by a senior member, and make a billiard, but it kind of spun out of control when i started, so now its some kind of a mongrel.

Re: My first shot at pipemaking
There's still a billiard in there somewhere. Keep on taking off material.
Re: My first shot at pipemaking
What Jeremiah said. You'll get closer to a billiard if you focus on removing material from the bottom and chin of the pipe.sandahlpipe wrote:There's still a billiard in there somewhere. Keep on taking off material.
This is already looking a lot better than the first one you shaped. Keep it up!
Re: My first shot at pipemaking
Keep cutting. Just stick a picture of a good Dunhill billiard in front of you and keep shaping.
