If indeed they are a myth, gonad envy would go a long way to explaining Sas's (shall we say slightly "abrasive") demeanor.Alden wrote:Yeti gonads are a myth.
But, in light of the atmosphere of diversity in today's society we love him anyway.......gonads or no.

This has yet to be scientifically determined. It is all part of the yeti enigma. One theory is that they are shit upon a rock and hatched which leads to one of life's big mysteries: which came first, the yeti or the egg?LatakiaLover wrote:Where do little yetis come from, then?Alden wrote:Yeti gonads are a myth.

That's weird. Don't they realize they are predators? I take great comfort in the fact that I have canines and my eyes face forward .Ratimus wrote:Bruce, I've known vegans who wouldn't even eat honey or wear silk.

Re: Vegan shellac alternative?
Lol i expected a little flak.
Thanks for some ideas of directions to experiement. I want something which will work to seal alcohol based stain on briar, leave a barely there feel, have good shine, stand up to heat and rigours of being on a pipe, and take a carnauba finish well.
I know i said i wanted to avoid the ethics, but for the perplexed, shellac harvesting involves killing the bugs as it isn't cost effective to make sure they are out of the way. You don't mind squished bugs, or you do, whichever is up to you, but vegans would avoid it, as they don't use any animal products, whether or not they eat it. Obviously there has to be an end point to where the line is drawn, as everything has potential harm, but i am cool with people choosing for themselves.

Re: Vegan shellac alternative?
I'm sorry, but this is one of the more stupid questions ever posed to this board!
WTF? Just how many vegans smoke a pipe? Aren't they tree huggers? Briar comes from killing a tree!
I guess my bowl coating of yak snot and other proprietary ingredients would not be vegan.

Re: Vegan shellac alternative?
Do you pay the Yaks, Bruce, or forcibly extract the snot? Or is it free range snot?
I think if there's a non bug killing finish which doesn't require toxic thinners, it's worth considering. There are such finishes, and one in particular that works superbly on pipes and has for many years. Why not?

I wish Mosquitos could make some kind of finishing product. I could probably supply an entire industry from my back yard. I'm sure glad the frogs in my back yard aren't vegan.

I think that's why hippies don't always have the best personal hygiene; it's an ethical issue. Listerine and Dial soap are responsible for the deaths of countless microbes.andrew wrote:That's weird. That's because of the Gray Zone.Oakbear wrote:I don't really think so, although others appear less inclined to return the same courtesy it seems.e Markle wrote:That's exceedingly generous of you.Oakbear wrote:...but i am cool with people choosing for themselves.
What's the Gray Zone? It's a stripe of intellectual real estate between "gravity exists" and "twelve little purple dragons with orange spots live under my bed and control the entire world with tiny laser pistols".
Where in the Gray Zone a given belief/assertion/claim resides determines an onlooker's response, regardless of culture or individual predisposition. Some value intellectual rigor over indulgence, while others value the opposite.
Since this forum tends to be frequented by a surprisingly well-grounded, educated, and technical-minded lot, the concept of "vegan shellac" was seen as being closer to little purple dragons than gravity.
Surprising, I know, given the whole Artist Personality stereotype, but there you go.

Re: Vegan shellac alternative?
Vegetable harvesting involves squishing of bugs. If the vegans don't mind a little bug juice on their food, then they should have no issue with shellac. Vegetables are consumed, pipe finishes are not. I have seen plenty of vegans wearing leather.Oakbear wrote:Lol i expected a little flak.

Do vegans tape their mouths while sleeping? How else will they avoid eating spiders when they sleep?
