I think the biggest barrier to making good, high quality pipes is really just the time, effort and willpower to figure it out. As some others have mentioned, there's really no chunk of information that can be related in a simple conversation that is uber valuable in and of itself because of this reason. That's why I don't think that educating people about general practices is much of an issue.

True. And just because you have the knowledge of how to do it, that doesn't mean you can.

To answer the main question, I share openly depending on the person I'm speaking to, their level of knowledge, and how well I know them. There are very few things I won't share at all, though I do have one or two things like that.
