Wow, that's different. Is that an integrated stand? A big thanks to Christian. Looks like a great piece!

Great job getting this going, rev.

Google translate strikes again!

Christian turned out a fascinating pipe there. Great job getting him to participate, Rev, and thanks for taking responsibility for his photos and such. :)

She is done and she stands. Overall I think she turned out ok. I was disappointed with the small pits but not enough I wanted to blast finish. I'll live with them. The accent rings are padauk and yellow heart. I'll post some photos here and a complete album in gallery.

Looking slim as to my pipe being completed. I destroyed a shank and do not have a block big enough for a single piece cavalier. Trying to get a 2 piece done in time.... At least I have learned some things in the process.

Same here, I cracked the shank twice, and the only way I could complete it now is with a very awkward construction. The walls are just too thin to function decently... I might finish it for myself - probably will - but this pipe is not leaving my shop as a Massis pipe!

But I still want in, so I started a new cavalier! It'll still be a small one, but the shank will be substantially larger. I've drilled the airway and the chamber, connected them and I have both sides of the shank turned to roughly the right diameter. I also have the top of the stummel turned so I'm nearly ready to go to the bandsaw and rough in the shape.

The main issue is outside temperatures. My workshop is not heated nor isolated, so it's -2°C in there right now. This means using the lathe requires 10 mins of gearing up slowly so the oil gets up to working temperature and all metal tools I use make it feel like I'm working with pieces of ice...

Nonetheless, I have about 2 weeks left, so I'll do my best to get it done!

Done.

The block wasn't the best, as you can see from the fourth picture, but other than that, it is about as good as I can make 'em. Such as it is.

Might as well say it now; I'm gonna have to drop out. I probably won't be making any pipes for awhile, actually, but I still love combing the gallery to look at the works of art you guys are producing.

Keep it up!

so while I was shaping a cavalier pipe and it occurred to me that I like the pipe more when I reversed the stem and plug to make it more of a cavalier horn. seems to still fit the definition? drilling is all the same just upside down..

I think that the idea is any moisture goes into the area where the plug is. In your scenario I think that the plug would not really be of any value.
